Question Kiwi Opinions

Any opinions on the diploma from Flight2000 and Waikato Polytech. 230hrsTT with a fair bit of multi time. From what I have seen it is very similar to the CAP schemes that were run in the UK. I know it has only just been introduced in NZ but i'd be interested to see what others think.

Just be-careful that should you want to opt out, you are able to get a full refund of unused course fees.

Last i heard after 10 days you lose your $36000, would be a shame if you have only done a few hours.

I read this thread this morning before doing the cow cocky thing and going to the fielddays in Hamilton. The Polytech had a stall there and was curious to see what they had to say for themselves. Actually he couldnt tell me a hell of alot. i.e. Do you get a license after spending a heap of dosh? "Ummm..I'm not sure". There is no way in hell I am going to spend all that money and not even get a damn license. He wasnt sure how much of the time you get will be in the simulator. He didnt know where students will be doing their flying, but " It was designed for pilots by pilots" Oh...Excellent I am sold. Where can I sign up.

It seems not many people at the polytech know anything about the course but I have a friend who is starting a job with the polytech in a few weeks. They will be able to expand on it a little more.

If I was considering this course I would hold off for a year or so and see what develops.

Be very careful.

It wouldnt suprise me if the Polytech guys themselves dont know too much about it - The school looks after most of the course and I think you'll find its just tied in with the tech. for the additional papers (such as buisness or whatever) that go with the whole diploma.

I have a couple of friends who have started on the new course that began a few months ago and from what they have to say they seem very happy. I dont know the details of refunds and time spent on the sim etc, but Im led to believe that the multi/IFR flying is done as a two pilot crew - Not single pilot.

Of interest is that Ardmore flying school - If you havnt looked already - Run the same Diploma through Manukau Polytech - Same deal - Full student loans, All licences and ratings etc. www.ardmore.co.nz (not sure if the diploma details are on the internet????

Youll prob. find the major difference between the two is that Flight2000 is computer based theory training.

Best to visit the two and judge for yourself I guess!

All the best anyway!

Exclamation

You'll find that the Aero Club has made an arrangement with the Polytech to provide the "launching platform" so that the course could be elibible for student loan. (Very similar to the Ardmore Flying School Course - in more ways than one )

A couple of things with this type of course you may want to be aware of is....

1) What qualifications are recognised - ie does the internal exams give you credits for your PPL, CPL, ATPL (or do you have to pay for those exams yourself).
2) What involvement (ie monitoring) does CAA/ASL have on the course content (i.e Are they Part 141 approved - this of course may be where the aero club comes in).
3) If you do not achieve the required qualifications within the 230 hours, who covers the overrun (basically what guarantees do you get if say you cannot fly for 2 weeks due to weather or aircraft unservicabilities, etc)

You may find that it will cost more than the $36,000 that is being advertised.

You may also want to think about what return you will get for your investment. Basically all this qualification will get you is to the proverbial playing field - with the industry in a depressed state and a rather large oversupply of qualified pilots at the moment it may be an awfully long wait to get the next job.
