jetblues, there are a very broad mix of backgrounds amongst the first officers. Many are from Regional Airlines, both f/o and Captains, some have been doing Night Freight and others are from GA flying pistons, so they dont all fall into the one category. The only ones with previous jet experience are those from Ansett, Flight West and the odd other one thrown in, that Im aware of. The process has worked really well as there generally a great bunch of guys/girls.
To they have any preference for the type of flying previouslydone. Would an sintructing only background with minimal charter be much of a hinderance?
Was anyone taken out of instucting??

Bugsmasha, Virgin, FAA ATP & OG3 :)
G'day Bugsmasha... I thought that you would have changed your name by now Not many bugs at 30,000 feet.
What is Virgin's policy on the FAA ATP? Rumour here not long ago that they didn't recognise it! I have both the Aussie and Yanky licence (with the Aussie ATPL passes) but didn't mention the ATP on the application just in case their recruiting people got confused.
As for Ozgrade3, I think the slip was intentional! I think he is trying to tell us that destructing is sinful
Actually Ozzy, about time you upgraded your name too isn't it?

Turbine,
Speaking of the FAA, I heard on the grapevine that CASA are no longer accepting FAA B737 ratings, and will not put the endorsement on the Aus licence. I Dont know the details, maybe someone from within DJ can enlighten us?

I applied some time back to VB, but got a knock back. They said they had nothing for my background and experience. Let's see now, about 15 years (pre 89) flying around Oz., Multiple thousand In Command jet time, current on 737 etc. etc. I didn't mind the knock back that much as I know there are a lot of experienced people applying but I wish they could have sent a reply that gave me some confidence in the integrity of the people running the place, or do the 'human resource' people intercept applications. I've never had to much confidence in them.

Clarence you are a little off the track with CASA's acceptance of the FAA type rating. Apparently ( I haven't looked it up myself) the wording of the regulation includes some language to the effect that a foreign rating will be accepted if it is on a recognised foreign licence. Either that or the rating must have been issued by an FAA examiner..I'm not entirely sure which is the sticking point. In any event the dispute arose when the CBR or MEL region butted in and said that the standard letters of completion of the 737 type rating issued by Premair did not meet this requirement. Having said that Premair do provide a copy of the letter from the FAA approving them to conduct the training and issuance of B737 type ratings under the applicable FAR's, probably part 61 or something. In other words they are approved designee's under the FAA's examination system and it seems rather odd that they don't meet CASA's requirements as FAA examiners. The problem would not exist if the type ratings were issued on a temporary airman certificate as it would then be issued on a recognised foreign licence. It is merely a red tape glitch which is being sorted out. CASA.....what more needs to be said.

Clarence,
I presented my Aussie ATPL to the FAA at Oshkosh last year and I now have a FAA PPL Airman Certificate endorsed with
"Airplane Single & Multiengine Land
Issued on basis of and valid only when accompanied by Australia pilot licence number(s) 5xxxxx. All limitations and restrictions on the Australia Licence apply"
If you want CPL and ATPL you will need to do the appropriate theory and practical tests.
I would have thought the Sim ride for the 737 endorsement would qualify as an FAA ATPL check ride, if you had completed the FAA theory exam.
