Well if it's sitting around doing nothing why not send it out to do some damage. Sure it will be borderline financially, but more the point it's the first real nail in the coffin for Mr Jones and the AWA bid.
Another perfectly timed destructive announcement by my hero Sir Richard.
"Ladies and gentlemen, the fat lady will be performing soon at a venue near you!"

Virgin Blue to inaugurate Coffs Harbour service
Virgin Blue is to start flying to Coffs Harbour in the airline's first service to regional New South Wales.
Virgin Blue said it would operate a daily 737 jet service between Sydney and Coffs Harbour from August 1.
The airline's chief executive Brett Godfrey said the 737-700 was three times larger and much faster than the turbo prop aircraft currently flying the route.
"We have already shown in places like Launceston and Mackay that if you take regional centres seriously and give them a serious aircraft you will get serious support," he said.
Virgin Blue had been working with Tourism NSW and Coffs Harbour City Council to ensure that people on the NSW North Coast had access to long-term low air fares.
An airline official said Virgin Blue had negotiated an acceptable arrangement on landing fees with the council, which owns the local airport.

So, what will this mean for the Hazelton operations into Coffs? Also, how do you think they will source their ground crew, and how would one apply for a ground crew position?
Does anyone see this being successful in the long term?
How do you think Qantas will respond? I've noticed they're flying the Dash8-300s in a few times a day now from Sydney.
One further question! When QF stops the 1900 service that links Coffs directly to Brisbane, does anyone see DJ continuing through to Brissy?
Any thoughts?
Cheers.

New codeshare!!! hmmmmm
courtesy of www.travelbiz.com.au
Virgin Blue and United Airlines have signed a code-share agreement giving UA access to major domestic traffic points around Australia and Virgin access to international passengers.
The arrangement, announced today at Sydney Airport, will mean a single United Airlines code for passengers flying on both airlines. The deal is expected to take effect within two months, subject to regulatory approval, according to a Virgin Blue spokesperson.
United general manager Australia Stephen Pearse said: “Both Virgin Blue and United Airlines are focused on giving customers the freedom of choice for air travel, which is what this code-share agreement will do.
“This agreement means we are now able to offer customers access to all points in Australia with easy domestic connections and smoother transfers. Passengers will benefit from United's extensive US network and Virgin Blue's broad Australian coverage.”
Virgin Blue chief executive Brett Godfrey said the agreement was another step in ensuring that “every segment of the Australian market is not subject to a monopoly”.
“With this new service, Virgin Blue can address the needs of inbound tourism as well as Australians travelling abroad, without compromising the highly efficient and cost-effective business model we operate,” Godfrey said.
Virgin Blue currently services every state and territory in Australia, using 17 aircraft. It recently sealed its Australian network when announcing plans to fly to Hobart.
The airline will also service regional NSW from August 1 when it begins daily flights between Sydney and Coffs Harbour using a Boeing 737-700 jet.
United operates daily services from Sydney to Los Angeles and San Francisco, and from Melbourne via Sydney to both US cities.

The Coffs Harbour City Council has a policy that any revenue generated by the airport must go back into the airport. This means that their airport nest-egg is huge. A bit embarressing because eventhough they have been poring money into the airport (runway extended, runway widened, terminal extended, gosh, even motorised walkways ) they have not been able to attract big players (one idea was Coffs direct to NZ).
So I dare say VB have been serenaded. But if, for a given departure time, ZL has, say, 15 pax and Eastern have 30 there won't be much left for a big 180 seat Boeing. My guess is it won't last long.

Well actually it will be a big 144 seat Boeing , but who wants to nitpick!
It will certainly be interesting to see how it goes, but that doesn't mean that DJ - or anyone else for that matter shouldn't give it a go.
Wasn't it Kevin Costner that said "build it and hey will come". Maybe the same applies, "fly there and they will travel"
Who would have thought a few years ago that a Newcastle - Hamilton (NZ) service would be a goer?
Fortune favours the brave....

Motorised Walkways??
Motorised walkways? In the Coffs terminal? BWAHAHAHA I could f@rt at one end and everybody down the other end would hear me
Or do you mean those covered walkways (airside) that have never moved in the last 6 months? A nice idea though.
Hoi! Laptop! Were we neighbours at some stage? Do you know Mrs. McGillicutty?

I didn't know Kevin Costner was in the HEY business but the last VB 737 I was in has 30 rows of 6 seats, but anyway.......
The covered walkways are motorised too!
I got some more info on Coffs. Apparently its not so much the council but the RESORTS that are pleading for a bigger aircraft. Their big money spinners are CONFERENCES but its hard to fill a 250 seat conference centre with 36 seat aircraft. So with VB a large corporation can connect through Sydney all its employees/delegates etc straight to Coffs. Arrive at midday, have a p$ss up, sorry, conference and then fly home midday 2 days later. Interesting. I will be watching.

Jarse,
Yes I know Mrs Mac - I used to be her dentist!
You can take the boy out of uppercumbukta but you can't take uppercumbukta out of the boy!
PS Mention - yes they have the 180 seat 800, but they will operate the 144 seat 700 on Coffs...
