New Zealanders flocking to the Sunshine State
BRISBANE, May 30 AAP|Published: Thursday May 30, 8:33 PM
The number of New Zealanders flocking to Queensland this year has surpassed expectations and resulted in the addition of more than 10 trans-Tasman flights a week.
Capitalising on the visit of New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark in Brisbane today, Premier Peter Beattie announced a second wave of advertisements promoting the Gold Coast and tropical north Queensland to sun-starved Kiwis.
Mr Beattie said a promotional push launched in February had been so successful airlines had been forced to increase flights to cope with the demand.
"The Tropical North Queensland campaign was launched in conjunction with Air New Zealand's announcement of additional flights direct into Cairns and I'm delighted to report that Air New Zealand flights into Cairns are fully booked to September," Mr Beattie said.
"By the end of July, if you include Freedom (Air) flights into the Gold Coast, the Air New Zealand group will offer almost 50 return services a week between Queensland and New Zealand."
New services to be phased in in coming months include flights between Brisbane and Queenstown, Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland, as well as a new Cairns-Auckland link.
New Zealand is the state's largest tourism market after Japan, with more than 265,000 Kiwis holidaying in Queensland last financial year.
