Point Cook Training Area - where does it go to?

I was having a debate with a mate, who has told me that the training area for a flying school at Point Cook extends all the way down to Torquay, going around the Avalon Class C airspace, overhead St. Leonards etc.

I find this hard too believe, as he also said that they let their GFPT students fly in this "training area".

To me, it looks like a mini-navex. Can anyone confirm this is true?

The training area is not always associated with the airport itself. Each school will have areas associated with the school which they can use. Some are the same as the other schools on the airport, but some will not be. Better to ask the individual school where their areas are. A school I used to be associated with used St Leonards, Queenscliff, most all the Bellarine Peninsular from Avalon, no problem.

It sounds like a hangover from the RAAF 1FTS days, when there were a number of sub-areas making up one big one which went over the areas described above - pretty much all the Bellarine peninsula, out almost to Bacchus Marsh, west to Moriac and Bannockburn (this would be ringing a bell with all the students who had to stand up and quote the area boundaries from memory at morning brief!), around Avalon's airspace, etc.

I seem to recall the Point Cook Flying Club would fly their C150's all the way to the Bellarine Peninsular climbing laboriously to 4000 ft. They flew over an awful lot of water and no way could they glide to land especially with HW component. Then they would do a few steep turns and stalls and maybe a PFL or two then flog all the way back. Very expensive for the poor student but good for the instructors. I could just visualize the upturned eyes of the sharks in the bay waiting for a ditching.
I could never understand why they didn't just do their medium level turns and steep turns just outside the circuit area and save the students all that money. I am sure the club had a good reason for it - but I never twigged what it was.

The training areas down at Point Cook does not extends all the way down to Torquay.

There are 2 training areas down at PC.

Training area 1 is from Altona South, Werribee South, Little River Mouth down to Avalon up to the Prince Frwy, NE Quarry passing Mansion back to Altona South.

Training area 2 is from Barwon Prison down along the old Baccus road to the oil refinery to Lovely Banks to Bannockburn to Leithbridge up to Mt Anakie turing back down to old Baccus road.

The areas in between area 1 and 2 are only used for transit.
