Post Virgin B737 with 270 kias restriction

A problem for a number of VOZ flying around lately. Anybody know the reason?

Due to an AD re. de-iceing; if an airframe is de-iced (LST o/nites lately) it is restricted to 270kias until it gets the cavities in the stab flushed out, and as they can only wash/flush in BNE at the moment, it happens that an airframe is restricted to 270kias until it passes through BNE on an overnight stop.
Not restricted by Mach, so it's only in the climb and descent that we have to slow down.

Angry

Care to publish the AD here please, OD. This concerns me more than a little, as I have just come through the Northern Hemisphere winter and we use de-icing almost daily - and often several times per day through ports that are located where extreme amounts of snow fall - without ANY notification of this requirement. Mind you, it will have to filter through several layers of CAB bureaucracy, then the Company Flight Department, and finally the printers before we get a whiff of it!

Out of interest, what grade de/anti-icing solution are you using?

Kaptain M - we're using the cheap stuff (Type 1 50:50 mix) as it's to de-ice, rather than anti-ice. I understand the AD only came out last week, only affects NG's and doesn't discriminate as to what type of fluid used.
I suspect the yanks have know of the problem for some time but decided to hold off on the AD until after their winter as to cause the least disruption ! A fix is due in July.

Thanks OD - you're probably right re the Yanks having known about it for some time.
Is the problem with the vert or horizontal stab?

Being an NG, and carrying more pax than the preceding series, I naturally assumed that there would have been more cavities required

Kap,

2 notices rapidly following each other for NG's although I'm not convinced the 2nd one is an official AD yet. However, it is entirely possible CASA have acted very promptly compared to elsewhere.

First gives 300 knts max speed for use of speed brake due stab/elevator vibration and is definitely an AD.

2nd is the one mentioned above giving the 270 kts limit in all phases of flight following de-icing - again elevator vibration is the symptom they're seeking to avoid.

Looks like basic structure of horizontal tail is having to be looked at very carefully and some subtantial modifications are expected. As ever, every single word on the subject is being sifted through teams of lawyers so the background information and the incidents sparking these alerts are very sparsely described.

Rob

PS - I finally got the model you so kindly sent - managed to get it from Danny's house just before the nice lady demolished his home with her car.

Thumbs up

Interesting stuff. Thanks PPT.

That's what Danny gets for parking his house so close to the road Seems there are some things that were never meant to go together, doesn't it...beer and ice cream, women and cars, Airbus and pilots

That little piece of plastic marvelry (have you managed to put it together yet? ) has gone the same way that the accountants dispatched inflight pax refreshments, decent hotel accomodation, and upgradeable staff travel.

Cheers.

Boeing have said that accumulation of anti-icing fluid in the elevator balance bays or accumulation of residue on the tab external surfaces have contributed to vibration in the elevator tab system.

I understand the AD that DJ are adhereing to is the FAA directive. CASA have not yet caught up and issued their own.

Well boys 'n girls it just points out that Mother Nature, as always, holds ALL the Aces and Jokers.

If we are gonna go play in her playground it will be on her terms and we had better make sure we at least keep up with her rules.

We often fail to truly understand, respect, treat too lightly or become compacent with the awesome magnitutde of the forces and the hostility of the environment, with which we routinely deal in our daily lives.

I can't think of a more potentially life threatening pastime than that we carry out daily in the prosecution of aviation and treat as a "right".
