Red face Oooooh, het i pen!

m-w... Sorry mate, I'd actually considered that translation but didn't think that could be right because...

1. I'd already been receiving requests for the URL; and
2. I thought everyone would already know about the avatar and caption stuff; and
3. I was having a bad hair day; and
4. I was pished at the time (one should never try to translate anybloodything while pished!); and
5. I ... [fill in preferred excuse here]

It involves the payment of money to PPRuNe's fearless leader, Danny Fyne, aka Capt PPRuNe. You pay a set fee for the avatar and a fee per word for the caption, plus a bit extra if ya want it italicised, bold or any other enhancement. I recommend paying for the bold coz, without it, some of the captions look a bit feeble.

Find the avatar of choice - best to find it on a site that's got a good track record for reliability. Supply the avatar's URL with the application, so that PPRuNe's server can find it everytime you make a post.

Not sure where the application forms are these days... maybe if our good mate Woomera is lurking, he can post details on where and how to make said application. Now, even tho it ends up being a HUGE price part of the dough goes toward upkeep and improvement of the site.

Paging Woomera...

Bozzo & lurch

Apparently P2-DOV was reborn as VH-NTK with Northern Air Charter in NT.

Smile PNG WAC's

The posts on WAC's seem pretty close to what I know, so the truth is in there somewhere. What I recall is that the master for each chart was on a heavy plastic sheet from which the charts were printed from, not glass. After 1975 a major revision was necessary but National Mapping did not have the expertise to conduct such an exercise and chart production ceased.
A Cartographer friend presented me with a set(the last?)of PNG WAC's just before he left Mapping. I stll have them hidden away some where (minus one from Hagen to the border that I foolishly lent to someone to copy)and I'll have as look and if possible, we may be able to colour copy for those interested.

I'm willing to scan the charts. Question is what file to save them as and where to post them?

Welcome back Sharpie, tho I guess your return means that your brother died. Condolences mate.

olivasnooze... the choice of file type for the scanned map will basically revolve around how BIG you want each file to be.

In general, the largest filesize results from scanning as a Bitmap. A good compromise filesize is achieved by scanning as either a Jpeg, Tiff or Gif type.

As for posting them, maybe it's better to simply offer them by e-mail to any who want them. In any event, I'm not sure that you'll be able to scan each chart in one go, so maybe Sharpie's idea is the best. He has the resources to do full size colour copies that might actually end up being usable for navigation.

You may be able to find Operational Navigation Charts (same scale as WAC's at 1:1,000,000 but 4 times bigger, numbers M13, M14, N14, N15) or Tactical Pilotage Charts (1:500,000, same numbers) if you're really lucky but the Aus Dept of Defence has clamped down hard on distribution of these so they are practically impossible to obtain.

Well that's clever...what will people use...the ONCs were very nearly as good as the WACs that haven't been available for over 20 years

ONC and TPC series charts are still READILY AVAILABLE thru the PNG National Mapping Bureau at Waigani. Cost per sheet is now K15. I was there last Monday and saw that they'd just completed a reprint of some of their ONCs.

PNG WAC's

My last post on the same subject was slightly incorrect. Apart from WAC 3097 Torres Strait and 3094 Guadacanal, I have a full set and expect to have access to copies of the missing two shortly if any one is interested in getting copies for nostalgia purposes.

Sharpie Condolences on the loss of your brother.
I am a starter on a set of those WACS.
They were stand out works of art on their own,and I can recall lots of guys proudly collecting them.
Love to have a set on me office wall even though my kids are embarrased to have an old pilot for a father.

Try Multimap. Not exactly a WAC but shows the same scale then you can zoom in.

Thumbs up

Excellent news Sharpie! I'll put me hand up for a full set too, as I have no idea when I'll be able to dig out the set that I've got stored in Cairns. I'm in CNS right now, but it's such a hassle to dig things out of storage - Wridgeways storerooms are way out of town and, in any event, I don't know which container they're in.

Anyway, let me know the cost soon as you've worked it out. I'll be able to pay the day I get back there - 31 May. This thread might just end up providing a good, useful service to those who want stuff like copies of WAC charts!

Meantime, just to keep everyone in the loop, I'll be getting a heap of photos from Eggman shortly. It'll take a while to get them all onto my FotoTime site, but I reckon the wait will be worth it coz he's already sent me the captions for them, so I know the sort of stuff that you'll be seeing.

Also, I've started receiving photos from Plugga, who works for a major PNG-based airline and charter company. Soon as I've got all the photos he wants to send, I'll get them online for you all to check out.

Should be plenty of goat tracks coming up in the next week or so! Stay tuned!

I have finally put together some piccies of my stay in PNG from June '77 till April '81.

The quality is not as good as your digital cameras but remember they were taken 25 years ago.

Please enjoy.

Yes thanks OAH, I really did enjoy that! Ya did a good job at Lowai mate, just a shame ya couldn't have found another 5-grand worth of damage eh! Also brought back long repressed memories of Lae airport and environs. Been many a long year since I was last there and I guess there's now a whole generation of pilots who never got there because of its quite sudden closure.

Reproduction quality is pretty good, considering the age of the original photos. I had pretty much the same problem with all the photos in my "early years" series. And, lets face it, photos taken thru perspex don't always come too well ... especially on the ... err ... odd occasion when its not especially clean...

ThanxOAH
Couple incidents spring to mind with the picture of Lae.Right where the photo was taken a 206 spun in killing all on board one afternoon.
A parachutist drove himself and his girlfriend off the far end in a car didnt become airborne and both killed.
Many happy times spent at the Dero and Steak House that was to the right of runway.
On another subject anyone catch Four Corners last night?
If that didnt look like a blue print for PNGs future I'm a chinaman.

Eh OAH you lived in Gurney st too...I spent a year living in Gurney st and another in Dysox Av, which was another Talair compound back towards Hospital hill.

I lived in the house immediately left of the pool, if you're standing by the Haus win. A bunch of us rebuilt the decking around the pool 'cause the one pictured was roting away...of course it was done with a never ending supply of pi$$ so the result, while sturdy...was a little heath Robinson

We had a Miss PNG fund raiser there and at some point, some irresponsible individual....mighta bin me played "Livin Next Door to Allan" at max decibels.

The there was the time that a Rascal came over the back fence...someone spotted him and so phone calls were made to several houses....the plan?....everyone run out with their weapon of choice and we'll ki...um arrest the bastard Well to the sound of blood curdling screams of pursuit he went back over the fence towards the 'Big C' shop....everyone raced out the gate in 'hot pursuit'...one guy had a speargun with a flare mounted on the shaft...as he got out on the road a car pulled out of Big C and he decided it must be the bastard rascal...so fired...Daddy K, Mummy K and Bebe K wore their ice cream cones

Thumbs up Livin Next Door to Allan

Does anyone happen to have a copy of this tune, in MPG or other electronic format? I'm dying to get me hands on it!
