Where to live near Bankstown?

I am emmigrating to Aus later this year and plan to instruct as I expect 1000 hours is not enough to get me any other kind of job. Maybe it is? Maybe I won't be able to get an instructing job? Who knows!?

Anyway, I have a young family and need to find somewhere to rent on my arrival. Through the web it's possible to fix up viewing before I arrive. So, which suburbs would you recommend that I look at, commutable to Bankstown, with houses/flats for rent with 3 bedrooms, rent 300-325 dollars a week?

Many, many thanks to those that can pass on any tips at all.

It's a big city and damn expensive at that. Perhaps others have advice on commuting to BK but I don't think it's that easy, suggest you get a car. Best rental listing on the net is via http://domain.com.au/renter/default.asp?state=nsw select area "Canterbury/Bankstown" if you want to live close to the airport.

Online maps of anywhere in the country at http://www.whereis.com.au/index.jhtml - you probably know the closer to the water, the pricier the real estate. Young families tend to be located in the west (ie everything west of Sydney airport).

Find out more about the city at http://sydney.citysearch.com.au/

You could get a fair place to live in Sutherland, Kirrawee areas but you will need a car as it's about a 45min drive, well it used to be. You will generally need a car to live in Oz anywayespecially Sydney.

The Sutherland shire was a top spot to live, surely it couldn't have changed to much over the last 4 or so years. It's close to the coast by road or by train. The station is on a main line and the schools in the area are good.

With the risk of getting personal, I hope that the other half can work aswell, the wages for an instructor over here are pretty poor. But I assume you already new that.

Bankstown is prodominantly a high crime area , with a high Middle Eastern population , probably best to stay away from there in terms of living .
You could probably find somewhere in the Sutherland Shire for that money per week. Far better address and alot nicer suburb.

Where to live near Bankstown? - Simple answer, NOWHERE!

Seriously though, the Sutherland Shire would be the obvious choice, if you don't mind the absolute c*nt of a drive across the Woronora Bridge and through Menai each day...really not what you need at the end of a long day.

Another option would be the Revesby/Panania/Picnic Point area (to the SE of Bankstown) - only a 10/15 min drive from the airport and not too bad in terms of crime etc. Rent would certainly be a lot cheaper and if you want to commute, I'm pretty sure there is a bus available.

Cheers,
TL

Also try other western areas, Parramatta area for example would be in your price range, it is Sydney's second CBD, a much safer area, lots to do and only 20-30 mins drive to Bankstown in peak times.

Be aware jobs are scarse at Bankstown right now!

Georges Hall is a good safe place to live, about 5 min walk to Airport. (it is adjacent airport)
Or Milperra, Chipping Norton, Moorebank, Bass Hill.

I would choose Chipping Norton.(5 mins in car) or Georges Hall for ease. Get a decent3 bdrm house for 280-320$ a week

or you could try the brighton/monterey/ramsgate beach side suburbs.

lots of 2br apartments in the sub $300 range and older style 3 bedroom houses from $300 upwards.

advantages ? your very own beach practically at your doorstep , loads of shopping close by , 10 minutes to the city , only 25-35 minutes by car to bankstown , and if you are lucky enough - a view of the departures from 16R + 34L from your balcony.

best of all , when the wind is just right , a whiff of burnt kerosene....ahhhh bliss.

There is a cure for this condition , but I have a suspicion that you don't want to know

Beats standing around in an anorak and/or being recognised.

As I live in the area I can honestly say that the best place for a young family is in the Sutherland Shire area.
Menai, Barden Ridge, Bangor and the pricier Illawong are all great spots.
One main road access to Bankstown across Alfords Point Bridge, plenty of schools, a local shopping centre so you don't have to drive forever to pick up the groceries, and the place is full of breeders like us so you'll have lots of new friends for the kids.
It's on the other side of the Woronora River so you'll have one less bridge to cross to get to work.
You should be able to pick something up for the price range you are looking for. We're about 20 minutes to Bankstown by car without traffic, but it's best to avoid the peak hours of morning and evening as it will take you twice as long.
When they finish the road works at Bangor it will make everyones lives alot easier.
Good luck with the move and welcome to Oz, you'll love it, and like thousands of others who arrive down under you'll never want to leave.

ooohh , a condx ? a cure ? anoraks? being recognised? - unless Ive missed something for the last 6 months , the beachside suburbs south of the city seem okay - plenty of young families around , schools and recreation areas close by.

curious now , tell all woomera , c'mon .

Whoops sorry I wasn't winding you up it was just a clumsy attempt at ironic/satirical humour.

The cure refers to the stopping of the looking up or stopping and standing watching every time we see or hear an aircraft going by AND the the wrinkles that come out of you know where, when one smells that burnt kero.

So far the only known cure is serious aversion therapy or the onset of old age and the inability to bend the neck back or rotate it. I am almost, but not quite "cured" using both methods

Anoraks are those persons whom we have fun deriding as poor sad souls for their passion for standing around the best vantage points watching, rego spotting and taking photographs of aircraft at airports. BUT who we would secretly really really like to join were it not for suffering said derision from our peers.
Me, I wear the full false beard, dark glasses, beanie and old raincoat disguise. They share as best as they are able, our passion for aircraft and things aviation.

Were I to live in Sydney the brighton/monterey/ramsgate beach side suburbs are some of the places to which I would gravitate.

woomera ,

no offence taken , just didnt know what anoraks and the "condx" refered to , now I do !! and agree totally about the anoraks -aka- "plane spotter syndrome" that can grip anyone from about the age of 3 up to 103.

having recently purchased a home in the afore mentioned area , with an unhindered view of the overwater arrivals/departures at mascot , I have to say that the "planespotter syndrome" knows no age limits - my grandfather at the ripe old age of 88 and a pilot in the ww2 pacific war spends most of the day marvelling at the 737's ,74's,76's etc that bound off the runways and spear upwards at speeds and deck angles that his wartime steeds laboured to match.

being 5mins from work is an advantage hard to beat , after previously having to commute from Newport.

Exclamation

peg, can I ask if you have a UK/JAR licence and FI rating? If so I guess you are planning on converting to CASA CPL/IR? Are you aware there is no conversion for your FI, you have to do the whole grade 3 course (cost $6000+). Now if all that has not put you off, drop me an e-mail as I might be able to offer some help on the job hunt front, although it will not be in NSW.

Have you considered the areas slightly west of pymble, such as lane cove, ryde, west ryde etc. Not sure about the prices, but as far as i was able to ascertain when driving out to BK a few times, these were pretty reasonable areas
