Impulse Pilots to work as Flight Attendants?

Heard a pretty good rumour today…….goes something like this:

As everyone knows Impulse is getting six more 717’s. QANTAS wants to get rid of all the Impulse 1900’s. These pilots from the 1900’s will be crewing the new 717’s. Only problem is that there will be a surplus of about 38 pilots who will miss out. Unfortunately for QANTAS they are obligated to keep these guys employed as per their agreement with the ACCC upon purchasing Impulse. To get around this a proposal is in place offering the Pilots jobs as Flight Attendants with Impulse until a flying position with Impulse becomes available. This is also why the Southern guys can’t be integrated into Impulse. With mainline also all but ruled out as an option for the Southern guys there doesn’t seem to be anywhere for these guys to go when Southern winds up in October……………………….unless there are lots more 717’s on the way?

Anyone verify this?

More B717's

QUOTE : Qantas News Article

BY : Geofry Thomas 10/04/2002

( Qantas In New Fares War )

To cut to the crunch of a three page article here's what we want to hear.

" According to Qantas executive general manager John Borghetti , the extra capacity has become available because the airline has taken delivery of 5 156 seat B737-800's.

Another 10 are due but the 30th of July, together with six more 106 seat B717's.

A FURTHER 10 B717'S ARE EXPECTED TO BE ORDERED FOR DELIVERY AFTER JULY.

Qantas and Virgin both have agressive delivery schedules for new planes."

In light of the Agressive Virgin Order for 40 new aircraft - I dare say you will see Qantas order these new aircraft ASAP and fill capacity in the market with both the B717 and New Gen B737-800's.

The new Financial year will see alot of action in the aircraft orders area...........

in the mean time.........

God Morning Good Morning Good Morning Good Morning Good Morning Good Morning Good Morning Good Morning Good Morning......

Tea or Coffee? Tea or Coffee? Tea or Coffee? Tea or Coffee? Tea or Coffee? Tea or Coffee? Tea or coffee?.......

Guess this is one way to improve the cabin service!

I'd hate to be the first Captain/First Officer who complains about the quality of their tea/coffee. I can clearly picture them wearing it...........

There are a few QF skippers who took the F/A option many years ago when Qantas was in retrenchment mode.

Yes Bonvil there are still a few of them left and they are a pleasure to fly with, having hands on knowledge of the C#$P we have to put up with.
Should be compulsory part of all 2nd officer training while they are still teenagers and know everything !!

I recall British Airways having a similar scheme several years ago. I think it involved the cadets, but once they had completed the flying training they were trained as cabin crew. They then stayed in that role until a seat up the fromt became available. There will probably be some very unhappy pilots forced to make ths move. But guys and girls look at the positives, you still have a job, treat it as an adventure, try to enjoy and im sure you will be back up the front in no time.

RFZ,

You may mean well but when in your wildest dreams would you expect the tech crew (that have spent countless years and dollars to get to where they are) to "treat it as an adventure, try to enjoy". Easy to say though isn't it when you're not going to be affected.

Personally I think the whole thing is a windup.

Impulse are currently recruiting F/A"s in sydney, actually the interviews begin today at the Airport Hilton, I am SO nervous!
But what a fantastic idea for the flight deck crew to work as F/A's, bringing all their experience and skills into the cabin. I would love to work with a peer like that.
Wish me luck, PLEASE...

Good luck ksd333.

Don't the 1900 FOs do the catering on the 1900 runs anyway? Should be fun to work with them I reckon. Definately get a different angle on things! Would love to see how they handle the whinging pax! I can't wait! Pax won't know what hit them...

Talking

We all know that most pilots are not "model" material. Most pilots are larger(ie beer guts) than most male F/As. So if Impulse go ahead with this plan, will they get the vote for "Not the World's most sexist Flight Attendants".

Just see VB's new advertising campaign, Two photo's, 1 showing the sexy VB F/A's and the other showing not so attrative blokes with the slogan at the bottom "Which service would you prefer?"

This is not new at Impulse, in the old days the B1900 F/O's would go back and serve food to the passengers on the longer flights. ie NTL-ML.

Vince Brown

Hope this info is correct , can you provide a link or a web site so we can all read it.

As for the ACCC (PETERWALLY) , they only deal with Anti competion not Jobs.

Keep up the good work

Just remember.......

Gerry never fed the pilots for years .....so most guys are in "shape" not the typical regional look....you get from other airlines.

Most guys even skippers are under 30 .....because in the old days no one wanted to work for the pulse so they had to take what they could get.........

I do agree nothing could ever top a Virgin Hostie .....But as far as Male Flight attendents go, at least we wont serve food with a lisp and a limp wrist.......

Pluss they'll get to be Cats amoungst the pidgeons.....get to know all the hosties and when they move to the right hand seat they'll have the place totally covered!!

Short term "not so good" long term "super good"...........

Correction

Sorry Ni Ident,

Got my wires slightly crossed. But I do understand that there was an agreement of some sort reached when QANTAS purchased Impulse (either written or verbal) that none of the Impulse pilots would lose their jobs and I should add, well done too. I’m all in favour of job protection for all pilots. As you rightly point out ACCC wouldn’t impose this. It was more likely a condition that Impulse came up with to protect all their jobs. Hence the guys are protected for a period (believe it’s around 3 years) where they have a number and are the next guys to get a guernsey on the 717. The Southern guys have been told that it is this condition that is stopping them being employed by Impulse. This is why some are irate. They are peeved that the new boys on the block have job protection, but they don’t. The guys are not angry with Impulse they are angry with QANTAS. This information (3 year protection etc) comes directly from General Manager of the Regionals, (not that I trust him) so if I’m wrong, it simply means that the General Manager is telling lies.

Seniorority Stands - 3 years

Seniorority will stand for the B1900 Pilots for the next three years........regardless of where they go or what position they take EXCEPT for Qantas Mainline - THANK GOD they did somthing right for once.

In saying this there will be only about 40 or so guys left in the dark for a short period of time.

Some are being encouraged to accept internal non-flying jobs or external jobs of their choice. The next 6 B717's crew list doesn't account for a summer schedule so down the track more will be called up to take their slots.

According to "John Borgetti Qantas" an additional 10 B717's look promising in the new financial year - so If / When they come I would dare say there will be enough slots to go round for Southerns 146 Pilots that have been left out in the cold just like the 1900 drivers.

Looking at the whole spectrum - Virgin to order 40 new planes / Impulse more B717's / Qantas Mainline more B737's with options for 60 / Australian Airlines more B767's - I dare say we will see some serious active recruitment happening towards the later part of this year.

Hopefully we will all get a window seat.
