All,. .Given that the excellent services of 2 Squadron, RNZAF have disappeared from HMAS Albatross, and the cost/availability of the Hawke or F/A-18, it is probable that civilian operated ex military aircraft will be used in Australia.. .For those who have reservations, don't, the Poms and the Yanks have been doing it for years.. .Tootle pip!!

S'funny, I was reading an Australian Flying magazine last night that had an article on the retirement of the A4's and the probable emergence of private operators under contract (because of the cost of the F18s). Very good article it was too.

The funny part is that the A4's belonged to the RAN and the article was written in 1987.

Ahh...the more things change, the more they stay the same.. .

Cool

Before the arrival of No.2 Squadron to Nowra, wasn't a Lear or Citation used for a period? Don't know how succesfull that was, But a private Hunter or Mig should be able to do the job at least as well if not better by a large margin.

Not forgetting that the P-51 was certified in Australia for civil commercial operations many years ago as it was used for a target towing contract.

Question

The RN had a set up using Hunter GA.11s from Yeovilton for many years (until 1995?) so there's nothing wrong with privatising a role like this. The blokes flying for FRADU (Fleet Requirements & Direction Unit) were all ex RN or RAF or similar FJ sticks.

I wonder if this is a portent for the future for the RAN?

Cheers

Some strange aircraft have gone flying against the RAN over the years. I've flown in a Qantas HS-125 doing radar calibration for DDG missile systems. . .And, FYI Torres, the late Jim Millar flew an Aztec, of all things, towing a great big drogue which was shot at by patrol boats using live ammunition. He came back one time with about 15 metres of cable left and no drogue. A piece of shrapnel had clean severed the cable [leading Jim to reason, possibly correctly, that the boat in question had been aiming at him instead of the drogue. He felt he should have at least had the right of reply!]. . .BTW, for anyone who wins the contract, the correct form of address on first contact with the Navy is : "Good Morning, Your Warship".

Illawarra Flying School had 2 P51's for the target towing contract.

I have heard that a company at Bankstown has plans to operate a fleet of Hunters for the Navy contract.

Capn Gidday. Do you have any idea who the intrepid aviator was who uttered those memorable and historic words "Hey Guys. I'm pulling the bloody target, not pushing it!!!" when the rounds started getting a tad too close to the tug aircraft?

Torres, thats a real oldie which I believe dates back to the WW2 in the RAF.

I first heard it in the early fifties and it was well known by then, so the genuine originator is probably lost in the mists of time.

Henry, during the Indonesia Confrontation period, a Meteor used to tow a target over one of those off- Singapore islands where the RAF Regiment had a late model Bofors. I was visiting one day and witnessed the first shoot of the day, which severed the cable and the target drogue was lost. Meatbox returns to Changi. End of shoot!

For the next five minutes, without pause for breath the unfortunate Rocky was abused by his Sgt, largely along the lines of, "it's a ******g target you******g idiot, you're not supposed to******g hit it!

Speaking of the Navy.

Has anyone else heard the rumour that Johnny's last visit to the US involved talks regarding the merger of the RAN with the USN????? <img src="eek.gif" border="0"> <img src="eek.gif" border="0"> <img src="eek.gif" border="0"> <img src="eek.gif" border="0"> <img src="eek.gif" border="0">

From a source that is supposed to be close to these sorts of things Buster, it wasn't about a merger with the USN (geez you ex AN Mk I people have a thing about mergers!! ), it was to line us up with their purchasing philosopy.

IE, rather than us re-invent the wheel all the time and draw up our own specs for our ships, they would be included with the USN and we would just tack a couple more numbers on their production line.

Anyway, who knows. It'll be years before a decision like that is made. Now if only we could tack a couple on the end of the USNs Aircraft carrier order!!!

As a now ex A4 pilot (& ex RNZAF), all I will say is what a load of cr@p. Obviously the Navy will try to put a positive spin on the situation, and good on them for attempting to get some AAW training with available local assets.

To have three warbird aircraft providing tasking for the NZDF is a joke. What's next? The Eketahuna Farmers Wives Club providing catering for the next Army exercise? Or the vintage truck society arranging heavy lift capability for the much vaunted LAV3?

NZ's PM has certainly screwed the NZDF's operational capability by ditching the strike capability. Warbird aircraft, crewed by part-time pilots cannot provide realistic air defence training. The lack of valid tactics, EW equipment, and disparate aircraft capability mean that the Navy is not getting effective training.

Its all down hill for the NZDF from here.

Nobody here in Canada whines or winges when a more efficient way of providing support for the military. Our company has an F86 Sabre for that purpose. We tried the A26 Invader (We have 16 of them) but we need to do more mods.. .Even a military report states we do it with a fifth of the personell that the military would require.

I used to be Ole Flashy but my new name is more of a statement about myself

Gog couldn't agree more. A vintage jet with about 10 minutes endurance, no radar/RWR's, crap comm's, no onboard weapons systems whose driver would be lucky to be current let alone 'Operational' would be far more capable in the Maritime strike arena than a front line Jet, poled by a professional military aviator who lives and breathes his job day in day out....

Get a grip on reality buddy...

kmagyoyo

My comments were regarding the Lear that the RNZN will also be using compared with the Hunter etc.. .Not a comparison with the A4s of No.2 squadron.
