....pity the general public will have to pay to see military aircraft fly at Amberley. I thought their taxes paid for that. Looks like Airshows Down-under have their finger in the pie and no doubt Patrics will sponsor the worthless souvenirs and prohibit anyone else from selling their souvenirs. [remember the 1996 75th anniversary series??].

Call me old fashoined, but real military airshows shoud be free [remember 1981 and those ones in the '70s]. Now I don't want to hear about the actual cost of running such an event. Privatisation, CSP, DRP etc are the big winners yet again.

Hopefully, military aircraft will be the showcase, after all, we are celebrating the RAAF's 80th. - and I believe that has nothing to do with Fred McGurkensquirters Ultra Light Aerobatics.

Good luck with your show Billy!

Pat on the back to the RAAF organisers - you have worked hard.

Should be a great show but beware anything run by Airshows Downunder will cost you $$$. Prices are similar to Avalon so be prepared to shell out heaps.

NOT Happy Jan!

$25 per day $110 for a Gold Pass?

What ever happened to the RAAF putting on a display for the taxpayer and what has the "business" folderol got to do with that.

Sounds like a self fulfilling prophecy to me.

Sounds like a waste of time for this one.
I was thinking of flying over for the weekend, but as usual the event is now a three ringed circus by the sound of things.

What have the RAAF done?

Elevator,

what the 'RAAF has done' has to been cut back to the bones in personnel such that they are no longer able to plan and conduct their own airshows; everyone is to busy doing their jobs and someone elses!! Plus, there would be no one left with any experience in planning and conducting them.

'Structured for War, adapted for peace' should really read 'funded for 9 to 5, adapted for crisis management'!!

Question

are the Roulettes appearing on both Saturday and Sunday..??

my very unreliable memory seems to recall Bendo mentioning them appearing at Warbirds over Scone...

Hellfish,

It should be possible for them to do both, if the timings in the schedules for both events were worked out right.

Roulettes will certainly be appearing both days at Amberley.
Due to transit / turnaround times they did ask to drop the Scone show, but they have been directed to appear.
Seems Bendo has friends in high places!

Either way, no matter which one you go to, the Roulettes will be there...

And BTW, apologies to all that are annoyed about the price of admission to Amberley. Please understand that those of us at the coal face have nothing to do with it.

LJR was spot on when he said that the taxpayers already fund the air force - why should they have to fork out more to see us fly?
Unfortunately, as ftrplt said, Air Shows Down Under have their paws all over it. From what I've seen, the RAAF is providing the vast bulk of the labour (crowd control, parking police, ATC, crash recovery standby, the bulk of the flying displays - you name it) but has very little control over the actual running of the event.
I'd say that ASDU has better contract lawyers than us.....

Also, is there still a push for a mini Prune-bash at Amberley? Everyone seems to have gone a bit quiet on that front......

Cheers,

SW

Question

The last weekend of September has always been about one thing....Grand Final Weekend, especially the last few years when both codes have been on the same weekend. It's a sporting heaven!! So not only does the Amberley Air Show clash with Scone, it is also on the same weekend as the AFL and NRL Grand Finals! Not the smartest weekend to put it on when the month of October is empty of big events. Given the success of both Brissy teams (not so much the Broncos now) and the massive TV ratings both events will get, surely that will pull a large crowd away from the airshow???
It also decreases the amount of publicity the airshow will receive as the finals tend to dominate the news throughout the preceding weeks, especially Grand Final week!!

Yes Swingwing, the grubby tactics of Airshows Downunder (my personal opinion only) resulted in a ministerial directive being issued to the RAAF to attend Warbirds Over Scone.

I am sure that you guys at the Coal Face, as you put it, had little to do with it. Unfortunately Airshows Downunder has put most of Australian Warbirds members offside, meaning they will get little support in the future.

Scone is the venue for the Warbirds Fans. The Roulettes, Spitfire, Sea Fury and Southern Knights will be "shared" between the two events but everything else will be exclusive to Warbirds Over Scone:
  • All Zuccoli's gear
  • All Pay's gear
  • Judy Pay's "New" Mustang (AND Col Pays, AND Trappo's, AND possibly another - 4 in total)
  • Strikemaster joyflight to be won
  • 3-way dogfights with Pyro
  • Yak-3
  • Yak-52 Formation team

The list goes on and on. You will also see a Bird Dog do some fairly enthusiastic Aerobatics, a sight not to be seen (legally) anywhere else in Australia.

Cheaper Admission. Better Prizes. Better Atmosphere.

Someone needs to make a decision on this one. Anyone can make it though.

I'm prepared to make a call and say 2000hrs in the O's mess for any blue suiter PPRUNErs who may like to make it but they would probably already be there anyway!

Apart from that, I'm not sure of the layout of the land so it is a little hard to call. Certainly a couple of ales somewhere would be great.

If someone who does know which tents are which and which beer outlets are which at the show is prepared to state a time and tent then I dare say we will all find each other.
