Qantas in New Zealand
I hear that Qantas have very poor loadings on their flights out of Wellington to Australia. Not unusual to have 20 or less flying. How are their New Zealand domestic flight loadings?

I'm afraid I must agree with Far Carnard on this - have travelled BNE/WLG/BNE three times since 15th October 2001, and not once would there have been more than 40 pax. On one particular flight out of WLG there were 21 only.
Don't know if this is the same for all QF flights out of WLG, but on these last three trips the loadings were appalling. I travel this route at least 12 to 15 times a year, and these past three trips have been the lowest loadings I have seen in the four years I have been travelling regularly on this route.

There has been a massive oversupply of seats on the Tasman for a long time. In early 2000, Air NZ brought out a new schedule which dramatically increased the frequency of flights between NZ and Aust. Of course, Qantas wasn't prepared to let Air NZ grab a bigger slice of the market so they matched the frequency - the result - too many seats. An example of the effect of this oversupply is in the month of November 2000, Air NZ lost approx A$10 million on their trans Tasman flights (slightly more than what Qantas lost). This oversupply will probably continue until airline reserves dwindle to the stage that one of the protagonists cries "Uncle" and starts reducing the number of available seats - no prizes for guessing who makes the first move.

Talked to an Air New Zealand pilot today who had just flown LAX to AKL in 747-400. Total passengers on board were forty (40). Not healthy for business but service was superb.
