Knee Jerk Reaction
I do not normally like knee jerk reactions, but I cannot see why this cannot happen immediately.
Aviation Authorities around the world must ban all carry on baggege immediately. All baggage must be checked in and checked by airline staff for contents.
The only carry on baggage allowed should be baby needs and medical needs and passports. No more duty free, suits, brief cases etc.
Get on the CASA, FAA etc for this to be implimented.
Just my thoughts.

Frankfurt Airport has the best baggage checkin I have seen.
Passengers check in at the main counter, they then go through security with their baggage which is checked on the spot. They then take their baggage to the departure lounge. At boarding time, their baggage is then checked in and they board the aircraft. If a bus used to ferry the pax, their bags are taken on a trailer to the aircraft and the pax identify their bags which are then loaded. If a bag is not identified, it is left behind.
This system must be implimented at every airport in the world. It is the safest system I have seen.

A woman rang her husband on a mobile from one of the hijacked aircraft saying the hijackers had knives.
Cabin baggage is a concern for all flights, not just the ones we do.
