BIK_116.8,
Your dead right. GA and regional flying would die coz all the guys with their new JAA licences will be off to Europe or the like to fly some decent equipment for some decent dough. Be b*ggered if I'd still be here if I had a JAA licence. Mind you right of abode would prove to be a problem for some.

Hmmmm,
Predictable sentiments.
Although as I'm contemplating trying to get work in UK would make my life easier!!! Quite a performance, and a costly one at that, to convert Oz CPL(H) to JAR-FCL.
Do we think its likely to happen? Any CASA types with any inside knowledge?
Cheers

Sure the gear might be new and with no dead flies on the dash or smells of oil perfuming the cockpit at rotation but wouldn't the standard of Europe be upgraded if the Aussies were let in. I'm European and have heard nothing but horror stories from instructors here about the standards of those who come here on holiday, decide to hire a plane (a third of the cost in the UK) and are occasionally refused such is their dire skills.

Wouldn't Australia have to join Europe before we joined the JAA?
And NO, we don't want them. It is difficult enough as it is.
As far as Licence recognition is concerned, ICAO contracting states can do that now, if they wish. See the recent bush fire emergencies. I wish them well and thank them for their efforts. But do they have Australian licences and if so how did they get them?

I have flown in NZ, Aus, Europe & the UK and hold all 3 licences, a Swiss validation plus an FAA (no time on the FAA licence). I have found Australia to be quite a long way behind with a fairly low standard of instrument rating and a CASA that is not particularily progressive with the whole legal side of things running on dispensations though the Engineering standards in OZ seem to be very high. JAR-FCL seems to be a mess and that makes sense as it is still in transition and there are just too many fingers in the pie trying to protect their own local market (oh well its their party)The engineering standards appeared to be nothing short of dismal. The Kiwi's adopted the FAA methods and tweaked it into their own culture and after having operated in all of these environments (only in airlines though)I must admit the FAA based system is far more progressive, has higher standards and is far more user friendly.
