Question Could this new airline turn a profit?

if someone won the lotto about 52 weeks in a row, could they set up an airline (just one or two planes) BASED IN DARWIN and make it work?
i have no understanding of what's required behind the scenes in an airline. i do know, however, that the population here is between 80 and 150 thousand depending on who you talk to and the time of the year.
i also know it's a bloody long drive to anywhere.
most people who come here either drive slowly and look at all the sites, or drive flat out.
plenty of people (particularly locals) look at the drive and realize that flying is certainly attractive. if you have to be somewhere inside a week, it may take you that long to drive there.

would an airline make money if it flew to the major capitals on a less frequent basis but in a more friendly manner. (just try flying direct to anywhere but Adelaide.)
say the plane flew to a few of these destinations per day – could this work?
What about concentrating on Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane direct?

I hear people talk of yields and load factors and long, thin routes. What do these mean to Darwin?
Also what competition would do to the Qansett mobs. (would they flood this market with capacity too?)

all opinions and reasoning appreciated towards the operational value of starting PPRUNE DOMESTIC AIRWAYS - AUSTRALIA

Qantas already have a daily service direct SYD & BNE. MEL misses out, though I'm sure if they perceived a demand, they'd fill it.

Ansett, direct SYD Mon, Thu, Fri, Sat, Sun;
direct BNE - daily.

I think they'd have economies of scale you couldn't reproduce with 52 lotto wins and a service that was predicated on travel ex DRW alone.

Yes. You probably have hit the nail on the head.
If you want a heavily discounted fare you may have to wait.
Produce the full odds and there would be a seat no probs.

sending this back to the top again.

still interested to know whether this could be viable, say one or two 737's? based in Darwin.
particularly with the way the Ansett kerfuffle has dropped our seat availability, could someone like the NT Govt./private company come in and set this up, running at a profit?
how much capital would be required?

Here is the latest news from the Qantas Website.

Qantas Increases Services to Northern Territory
Sydney, 28 September 2001 :

Qantas today announced it would increase services to the Northern Territory from 6 October, with an additional 15 return services each week.

Executive General Manager Sales and Marketing, John Borghetti, said the additional services would originate from New South Wales, Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria and Queensland.

"The boost to our Northern Territory services is the result of unprecedented demand heading into the summer season," Mr Borghetti said.

The following services will be added to the weekly schedule:

* Three return services between Sydney and Ayres Rock
* Three return services between Perth and Darwin
* Two return services between Adelaide and Darwin
* Two return services between Melbourne and Alice Springs
* One return service between Melbourne and Darwin
* Two return services between Brisbane and Darwin
* Two return services between Sydney and Darwin

Mr Borghetti said the Northern Territory was an important and popular destination for both international and domestic tourists and the additional flights would cater for the upcoming peak holiday period.

Bookings and inquiries about Qantas services to the Northern Territory can be made at licensed and AFTA travel agents, Qantas Travel centres, by calling Qantas on 13 13 13 or at the Qantas website www.qantas.com.au.

Huntsman:-

your certainly not the only pilot to have that lovely thought pulsing around in your head. Darwin is a pretty good hub into south east asia and most flights in and out south have very good loads, especially qf now.

In theory I reckon your airline would work problem is there is a huge gap from theory to reality..... Show me the money and a 737 !!!

The question is why haven't Virgin brought their NT start date forward??? Even with red eye flights? Tell me again why does Mount Isa need a 737 servicing it??? Not all that far from DN in a 737........

There ya go Huntsman great minds do think alike.......
