Thumbs up The Beautiful Morsbey

Geeze I almost fill embarassed posting a new thread on because at some time everything has basically been covered. Sorry!!
I am heading to PNG on Monday and am after some local hints for basic questions?? I hear the Gateway or Waves hotel are the best places to stay in POM?? Is it still farily quiet on the hiring side of things up in PNG that people may be aware??
Just wondering if anyone has some more local tips that may be of assistance for POM..
Thanks in advance,
QA

Not sure why my mother bought me a one way ticket..

Yup. Correct spelling helps. It's Moresby.

Not "Waves" hotel... I suspect you mean the Airways Hotel. Both that and the Gateway Hotel are close to Jacksons Airport, but pretty expensive places to stay. A cheaper place, further off airport, is the Granville Motel. It's run by an expat, I think, but you might want a rental car to get around from there as it's quite a hike to the airport if you aren't accustomed to tropical heat at this time of year.

And, of course, if it happens to be p!ssing pick handles, you'll get a proper drenching that the average umbrella will not prevent.

You might want a rental car anyway, wherever you decide to stay. They, too, are expensive, but at least the Granville Motel rents second-hand cars that might be a bit cheaper. I'm not tying to direct you to the Granville because I don't think I'd stay there myself, but it might work out cheaper for you, if you can rough things a bit.

The South Pacific Aero Club in at the GA end of the airport (south-east end). Always a good place to find local pilots from abut 4PM most days.

I'll be back in town today (11 Jan) but don't yet know what my roster looks like next week, so can't tell if I'll be there while you're in town. In any event, I'm out of touch with the employment scene, so you'll be better off finding out the real story at the Aero Club bar.

Good luck.

Wink

If your going there to look for work I would advise 1st getting a list of the operators together (perhaps from the yellow pages, most are in their)and phoning them all before you go. They may just help you out accommodation and transport.

I have a friend who went up there looking for work and never had to pay for accommodation or transport. The local chaps helped him out, he supplied the beer. They also gave him a lift to other ports when able. SP lager- not a bad drop. Dont forget to hit the POM aero club.

I went to visit and loved it, I love heat and humidity. I would have liked to have done some time their but unfortunately my career was at the wrong stage.

Good luck!

Thankyou Air Ace for noting that deliberate spelling error on my part. I have a habit of testing people out like that..
OZ, no worries will check the granville out as too the Aero Club... I guess transport around is left to PMV's or cabs if rental cars are out of the question??
Thanks Soup, got a list and have chatted with a few operators. Seem fairly quiet, except Air Link at this stage.

Cheers

Cool

quietales. I'd like to help you - but you worry me! Have you really done your homework?

You can't spell the place, you don't know where you will stay - and you talk of riding in PMV's?

I was only in PNG for 23 years - not long I admit.

Maybe you should get a little more advice first? Email me if I can help.

Cool

Well I won 2nd division lotto in pom in 95 ,a total of K150 tasol and I even got the money.
I don't know what your experience level is but I have heard that Regional air is looking for otter drivers ,the man to talk to is 'mad dog' Pete mc grew (dont call him that),but if your not up to that try north coast aviation or even dave miles two hangers down from the dero club(old air manubada hangar)another one would be tropic air I don't know who the current cheif pilot is but chris tewson is the opps manager or something

If you buy enough beer and don't act like a complete knob someone at the aero club might put you up for a few knights

Good luck in PNG Quietales, I have no doubt an ex territory bush banger like yourself will have no trouble getting on up there.
p.s. Sorry we didn't catch up for that beer, pudgeguts said he's had a few with you instead in Syd.

G'Day Veggie and all,. .. .What a ball I had in PNG for the couple of weeks whilst up there. I went for a fly with the boys from North Coast Aviation from Lae and covered a scarey amount of territory. I must admit Veggie the first day we started out on the North Coast Run up to Wasu and back through the guts- Satwag etc etc (my god that strip is bloody nuts) ,over the congi gap back to Lae was a bit "how ya going". After the 9th hill you land up and took off down,Islander engines screaming for a half decent fuel/air mixture, realizing this is the norm that you kindof feel hooked on the flying.. .The Afternoon was all stops to Derem (I think thats how spelt) , on the south coast of PNG. Places that bought a smile to my face were definatly Kainteba and a few other little strips SP lager has since removed names from my brain. . We tried for Kanabea however the weather packed it in well and truley in the avo.Just as well I saw the photo's..... . .The pilots flying with NC were all extremely professional and safe operators and curtious to fellas who head up there looking for work.. .. .Although the aviation scene is fairly quiet at present i.e Airlink, MBA and Northcoast have completed thier hiring it's a definate career path offering quality flying, great learning and a heap of memories for this aspiring driver.. .For the interest of Guy's going up there there is generally a 1000TT min for NorthCoast and a 150 Hour ICUS requirement. Even once the ICUS is completed you are required to be checked into each individual airstrip the company operates in and out from. You will understand this once you see these suckers and their approaches. . .. .As for the nightlife , I've been sworn that all that happens in PNG stays in PNG.... . . . .. .Cheers,. .. .QA
