Talking What to do in Perth WA?

Should post this in "Nightstop"but might not getas good a response.

Can any Oz mates recommend what to do in Perth and environs on holiday with a family?Kids are aged 10 and 12 and we are going in early December.

Any ideas on good places to stay/places to go would be welcome.

Thanks,

Bus

Cool

Fremantle isn't a bad place to stay, lots to do for the kids.

I'd recommend having a look around the South-West. Places like Dunsborough and Margaret River are worth a look, about a three and a half hour drive south of Perth

Let me copy sections from a web site I run (it's all about WA)

Good place for a family to stay are apartments or apartment/hotels. Typically $A60 for a one bedroom and $75 per night for a 2 bedroom place. Not much in the way of B&B in Perth, or guest-houses. Non-apartment hotels get very pricy.
Try these places for bookings: http://www.city-apartments.com/ http://www.wheretostay.com.au/accom.asp?ID=60000150

Taxis
Lots of them around. Call them by phone (Swan: 13 13 30), at a taxi stand or hail them on the street. Reasonably priced. Here is what Brown's Apartments say on their website, and they are located in the city:
Domestic side of the Perth Airport - $ 7.00 per head by Airport Shuttle Bus & $ 20 per trip by taxi.
International side of the Perth Airport - $ 9.00 per head by Airport Shuttle Bus & $ 28 per trip by Taxi.
Note that at Perth it is all the same airport, but the terminals are on different sides of it and miles apart. I worked with the guy who drew up the Master Development Plan for the airport, which led to this situation. He now lives in Tasmania.

Public transport
Lots of it, safe. Reasonably priced. Typically $3.30 for a 45 minute journey. The bus tickets stay valid for (I think) 90 minutes, so you change buses en-route and don't have to pay again within that time. When I go into the city, I drive to the bus stop near my house, leave my car, and catch a bus into town. Beats finding parking. TransPerth covers rail, bus and (the one and only) ferry. They have this incredible website where you type in the street addresses of where you are leaving from and going to, and the time. It gives you 5 different travel options, with times, distances to walk, instructions on where to get on/off and change. http://www.transperth.wa.gov.au/

Drink-driving laws
Don't even think of drinking and driving. You will get caught. Leave the car and grab a cab. Or get a bus or train home. If you know you are going out to dinner, and there will be some drinks there, take a cab both ways or tell your partner that they are not drinking because they are driving. No Australian will think it the slightest bit odd if you take a cab home. They will find you odd if you drink, and then try to drive though.

Hire cars
The reliable cheap Bayswater Car Rental is my favourite: main phone number Perth 9325 1000. Not open Sundays and public holidays. Can't find them on the Net though, nor a fax number. Don't worry about pre-booking; they've lots of cars, and there are lots of alternative companies. $14 per day for bottom of the range car without aircon. I typically figure on about $24 per day all up with air conditioning. In Perth, December to March inclusive you'll die without aircon. Fuel here is just under $A1 per litre but fuel prices change every day.

For more rent-a-car companies, pick up a copy of "What's on in Perth" as you get off the plane at Perth (they are in a rack as you come out of the airbridge, and before you pass the duty free going downstairs to customs, or there are plenty in the terminal, or just use the Yellow Pages. The big ones (Avis, Budget etc) all run $100 per day.

For other companies: http://perth.aceonline.com.au/today/hirevehicles/

You don't need to arrange a hire car to meet you at the airport when you arrive. Not needed. Grab a cab from the airport to your place of stay. Then pick up the car in the next day or two. Catch the bus into town and get the car. Traffic is always light and it is safe to walk around. Use public transport to get around initially

By the way, over in Australia, everyone walks. So a combination of public transport and feet will get you most places. Bring comfortable shoes for walking, because you will do plenty. The biggest complaint from new arrivals is how far they have to walk.

Plenty of places to hire bicycles. Absolutely wonderful cycling around the river. Almost better than going to Europe. Stop off in South Perth on the riverbank, and hire a catamaran and go sailing for an hour. Then have an expresso in a riverside café.

Have a good stay.

Hi

Perth's got some of the best beaches in the world and it's coming up to nice swimming weather.

Not sure if I can give this url here but here it is anyways http://www.surfsite.com.au

It's a great site that has live cam views of around 8 or 9 beaches in Perth and surrounds, with descriptions and their locations etc etc. I check it out all the time to see what's happening at the beach.

Enjoy your visit.

Rottnest definately. Also you could take the kids to Adventure World and watch all the aeroplanes fly over on their way in to Jandakot while having a good time.
I hear the underwater place at Hillarys is a good day out, and the zoo is supposed to be good value too.
Or just veg on the beach!

Thanks to all of you for taking the time and trouble to reply. I'm going to copy the links and have a look.
Keep it coming!
Punannee - not funny, mate - the kids clicked on that one.

Enjoy your stay in the 'wild west' it will be fun and exciting and an opportunity for the kids to see the 'bit' that stops the east coast from sliding into the Pacific

My apologies for missing the "link" as I was not expecting a perfectly innocuous thread to go there.

Punannee and the rest of us

I understand that you probably feel that as this forum is inhabited by consenting adults only, a little 'licence' is acceptable.

This should demonstrate that this is not so and also if you monitor the 'Who's on site' thingy at the top you will see that visiting guests about equal the number of members. We have no way of knowing who or how old they are.

I am sure we would all wish to be recognised and respected as aviation professionals, neither would we wish to be seen as stuffed shirts.

It could also be argued that by allowing our children unfettered access to the internet then we should have no arguments about what they see where.

However, I believe in this case that Bus429 was probably sharing the planning of a "family" holiday trip with his children at the same time as introducing them to the world of his professional peers.

JB is the place, not here and I suspect that Bus429 was careful to avoid that in this case.

I guess the test, for this forum in any event, is, if I was doing the same with my children what would I be happy to see.

I have amended the link to something more appropriate.

Wink

I had the pleasure of spending a couple of nights in Perth a while back and there is a little Spanish restaurant, Pedro's I think it is, it's located in the down town area and should be real easy to find. Just ask the cabbie to take you to the best seafood restaurant but do NOT go in. Instead cross the road and you are there! They do the best prawns I have ever had .... 4 ways! Excellent with a couple of cold Swan lagers!

Hi Redsnail - long time no hear!

Punannee - I love a wind-up and I suspect you do but this forum is not the forum for that sort of stuff. Time and a place and all that.

Thanks again to the rest of you for advice on Perth.

Regards,

Bus

PERTH VISIT

Tapped into my two boys - age 10 and 13 for their top 3 things to do in Perth.

First choice of both was go to the movies (lots in Perth). Second choice was go ten pin bowling (several in Perth). Third choice - drive around and show them Perth (!)

Maybe for the kids, it's more about spending quality family time than seeing Perth (is that a dig at me or what?). However try this:

Rottnest Island - easily good for two day trips - ferry over (about $A100 for family) - hire bicycles on the Island (not on the ferry) ($A100 for 4) - cycle and swim and snorkel. Take no food - get a pie and choc milk from the old bakery for an old fashioned Aussy meal. Parents can eat stylishly at several spots.

Perth Hills - up to Kalamunda and Gooseberry Hills - walk the ZigZag or Bibblemun track for a few hours - breakfast or lunch at the 2 excellent French patisseries up there. If its a hot day, spend a couple of hours at the Kalamunda pool with all the slides, etc.

Hillary's Harbour - Underwater World. Excellent.

Beach - Cottesloe or North Beach or Trigg - visit in morning before the sea breeze (good for visits 3/4 times per week - start the day with a swim).

Northbridge - family dinners at the markets - $A60 including wine or beer for 4. Walk there from the city or Central station

Fremantle - its got the laid back feel of New Orleans at a smaller 'village' level. Walk around, lunch at Cicerellos fish and chips at the harbour, dinner or coffee on the main street - called the cappucino strip - big markets during the day, maritime museum, etc.

Bring swim gear, hats, sandals. Buy sun tan lotion (lots).

Buy the local paper - West Australian - (especially Friday) and read all the things to do. Plenty of festivals, entertainment, rallies, open days, etc.

Best thought - go on one of the very many 1/2/3/4/5/6/7 day four wheel drive excursions. These are aimed at backpackers and adventurers, and there are many such younger international travellers in Perth, although oldies can (just) make it. Camp under the stars. Go dune boarding down sand dunes. Swim on deserted beaches. Abseiling down all sorts of things. Sleep at a sheep station. Visit eco-tourist things. Mate of mine did this with his girlfriend (and he was old enough to have 4 bars) - life transforming experience. Loved it. Best way of bonding with the kids and shaking their comfort zone.

Overrun,

Did one of those trips out of DRW in the summer (or winter!). As you say, excellent fun. Although tailored for backies, family of 4 no problem. Kakadu et al was brilliant although the swim up to Twin Falls @ 0600 one morning brought us to the brink of hypothermia!

Thanks to all,

Bus

Unhappy

*Sigh*..... another "free thinker" with no concept of a time and a place for everything. Punannee and Ace, swing your baseball caps around boys, (or should that be dudes?) and go searching for a little commonsense.

Who'd want to be a moderator? Keep up the good work, Woomera, most people appreciate your efforts.
