Plane crashes just before Newman memorial
By Melissa Kent, online reporter
A PLANE crash-landed in Newman this morning just before the town paid tribute to four police officers killed a kilometre away in a plane crash earlier this year.
Sgt Brian Caswell, of Karratha police, said the strange coincidence had added to the emotional atmosphere at today's memorial service for Sen. Const. Donald Everett, 49, Sen. Const. Phillip Ruland, 32, First Const. David Dewar, 31, and Const. Gavin Capes, 27.
The officers were killed when their Cessna 310 crashed in bush near Newman on January 26.
About 9am this morning, a Cessna 210 skidded on its belly down the runway at Newman airport after the wheel mechanism failed to operate.
Sgt Caswell said the pilot walked away without injuries.
About 300 people attended the service in which a memorial stone was laid outside the Newman police station and later gathered at the crash site to pay their respects.
"It's been an emotional day - it's the first time all the police officers that were stationed in Newman at the time have come back," Sgt Caswell said.

Strewth, it couldnt have happened at a worse time. It must have been a good job done by the pilot if he(or she) walked away alright, hope the A/C is repairable (and also hope it was a mechanical failure, or I retract the "good job" statement).
does any one know if it was a 310 or a 210?.

Good one punapadantic!
We HERE at Cat Towers have HEARD in our omnipotent understanding of the Kimberley that there was an unfortunate accident at Newman, we also would like to know the exact details. Hence the question marks at the end of our last post.
Cheers

Fresh from the Newman guys today.
The one that went guts up last Thur I think it was, was BIV the 210, and yesterday it was the Mooney KSX. Saw them both pushed up. Guess if things come in 3's then that Saratoga will be next!
(Sincerly hope not!)

I don't know where Miss Kent got her info from, but we had just departed Hedland when centre told the F50 that Newman was out of service due to a disabled aircraft, and that was about 1700 WST from memory. I don't know but something tells me if the "belly flop" occurred at 9:00 am then centre would have told the crew a little earlier than that. If she got this wrong then she probably got the aircraft type wrong as well. The F50 did divert to PBO.
