Post 89'ers lovers and haters

The great council of Woomera chiefs is currently meeting to make decisions about 1989 threads. Please, no more Woomera-o-grams in the meantime. There will be another posting from Woomera in the next few hours.

Woomera, please keep up the good work by creating a separate forum, along the lines of 'Jet Blast' with appropriate warnings re offensive material, for all that refers in any way to the events of 89.. .Unfortunately, the rantings and vitriol of a few. .make pilots in general seem like a bunch of retards, and this can only have an adverse effect on the future overseas employment prospects of ALL Aussie pilots.. .Most normal people probably don't bother with the infantile nature of 'Jet Blast' after one or two looks out of curiosity. An 89 forum would probably only attract those directly concerned and a few windup merchants.. .And, no, I didn't work for Ansett, or Australian Airlines, so I am not defending anyone's position,. .merely expressing what I think the majority would agree with re a separate forum for this subject.

Woomera, I don't envy your plight.. .. .To put the demise of Ansett in perspective re: the '89rs. . .. .I compare it to a Grand Final victory - tonight there will probably be much celebrating and tomorrow, many hangovers. In a month - not many will even remember who won ! (except the winners -of course)

This is a chat forum, where people choose between different threads. . .. .We CHOOSE between different threads. It is lamentable, perhaps even hypocritical of individuals to deliberately open up a thread in order to demand that it be closed down.. .. .If you don't like a thread then leave it and find something else more to your taste.. .. .Diversity and tolerance (in the form of cut and thrust argument) are the key to the success of PPRuNe. Don't impose a throttle on the free play of the forum. Or compartmentalise subjects to the point of boredom.. .. .It is instructive to note that most of the people screaming about the 89 dispute posts and demanding that they either be stopped or moved to a discreet forum are relative newcomers to PPRuNe.. .. .There have been divisive issues before. And, there will be divisive issues in future. If we attempt to contain debate or neutralise opinions or brush tough talk into discreet forums then we run the risk of denying PPRuNe the natural pluralism it deserves.. . . . [ 04 March 2002, 09:50: Message edited by: HIALS ]

HIALS, that's a very good post and I think the powers-that-be would do well to take note.. .. .Also, we mustn't forget that now is a particularly sensitive time for many people. I think that a lot of this will die down of its own accord fairly soon.. .. .I don't find these posts offensive simply because I've read so much of it before. I am firmly on one side of this argument, but as you can see from the repetitive content of the posts, from both sides, that nobody is going to change anybody's mind on this forum. It's simply a lot spleen venting.

WoA,. .. .You have been on PPRuNe for 2 years. I have been reading it 3 times that long.. .. ....You opted to open this one...!!!. .. .You OPT to open all of them.. .. .If you can't handle the heat, get out of the kitchen. Let other people have their say. None of us are trying to silence or banish you. Nor make you mark your thread in advance to save us from ourselves and our curiosity.. . . . [ 04 March 2002, 10:43: Message edited by: HIALS ]

Do we need 50% of the top 20 posts a while back to be related to 89?. .. .I think not. . .. .It is giving D&G a bad name ... give them a forum of their own ... please!

If 50% of the top 20 posts on PPRuNe are related to the 89 dispute then it must be an issue that draws the attention of the majority of PPRuNe'rs and shouldn't under any circumstances be tampered with.. .. .Name any business that would identify one of it's top lines and then discontinue it...!!??

well Hails, I have been here a while longer than you might think..(remember the big crash where we all had to re register) and I agree, I do opt to open them all....but I also opt not to (asually)open 89 threads. I wouldnt dream of asking them not to post at all, but just label them so they are clearly recognisable as 89 threads, or not take over a thread about some thing else with all the 89 bitterness that usually accompanies those type of replies. . .[Edited to afford hails the same courtesy afforded me]. . . . [ 04 March 2002, 11:22: Message edited by: the wizard of auz ]

Woomera I recalled that an old poster did indeed set up a '89 BB. Did some searching for a while and found this URL :-. . http://www.discussion-board.com/thewar/Ultimate.cgi

Hi Hials. .. .Does that mean this 89 crud has been going on in Dunnunda for 6 years ? Glad I haven't been around here that long if so. I would have tuned out years ago. . .. .By the tone of your previous post you seem to be of the view that usage of a public forum imparts some form of proprietorship or special rights over someone who has not been around as long. Sorry mate this aint no flight deck seniority list.. .. .We all know you guys were screwed over by Hawke and his mate/s. But this is no different to so many people in all walks of life in all lines of work. . .. .Lifes a B_itch and sometimes you get screwed - You just have to pick up the pieces and move on.. .. .The truth of the matter is fella's - the overwhelming majority of punters in this forum have got enough of their own personal problems and crisis to deal with. We don't need your grief.. .. .The fact that the worm has now turned should be a new beginning for you lot. . .. .If you are unable to do this then then what is the problem with a seperate '89ers forum ? You would be free to vent your spleen at each other to your hearts content, without having to worry about us "had absolutely nothing to do with '89 and couldn't give a rats" type people asking you to pipe down because you're embarrassing the Australian industry. Who knows we might even pop in for a visi sometimes to say hello.. .. .Or perhaps the '89ers consider themselves part of an exclusive club on parade day. No point being in it if nobody knows. Only problem is you guys seem to have 365 parade days a year.. .. .Digs deep bunker and waits for incoming.

WoA,. .. .The task you put before Woomera and the other moderators then is not one of deciding whether to open up an 89 forum. But, rather, to devise a labelling system that can be appended to threads, from time to time, to defend the sensibilities and biases of PPRuNe'rs.. .. .What an impossible task!. .. .One of the great strengths of PPRuNe has been the weft and warp of the discussions that have been held on this forum since it's inception. These have constructed the fabric that is PPRuNe. We would tamper with such vivacious diversity at our peril. PPRuNe will cease to be PPRuNe if we go all normative.. .. .Take a 'big picture' view of things. This is an issue of the moment. People's enthusiasm for the subject will wane. We will move on to other topics (some of which will be boring or upsetting to certain portions of the readership) and PPRuNe will live on. If we take the big brother stance you advocate on this issue, then PPRuNe runs the risk of being drawn into taking action on every upsetting or controversial issue henceforth. PPRuNe will become reactionary, normative and ultimate truly boring.. .. .Let's not have that happen.

Why devise a labeling system?, when one already exists..........the thread heading should do it, it only requires people to include 89 somewhere in the heading or make it obvious thats what its about.
