Post Sad day for last captain

. .History in the making: Mark Littlely at Melbourne airport yesterday. Picture: Karen Dodd. . . .Sad day for last captain. .By ROBYN RILEY. .Sunday Herald Sun. .03mar02. .. .MARK Littlely will take little pleasure in becoming part of Australian history on Tuesday when he pilots the last Ansett flight into Melbourne.. .. .Captain Littlely, 39, will fly AN170 from Perth, touching down at Melbourne Airport shortly after 6am in what he said would be a melancholy duty. . .. ."I will be sad, because it could be the last time I fly a plane for an airline in Australia," Capt Littlely said yesterday. . .. .But he admitted the flight also would be very special to him. . .. ."I plan to have a ball and enjoy the moment," he said. . .. ."It will be special and I do feel very proud." . .. .Colleagues have asked Capt Littlely how he feels about Tuesday's flight and how he would approach it mentally and physically. . .. ."When I get into an aeroplane and physically strap myself in, all the turmoil disappears and I tune into what I have to do," said the Oaklands father of two. . .. ."I do not have a problem with it, I plan to just enjoy the moment." . .. .He said he hoped it would be one of the best in his 20-year aviation career.. .. ."In 10 years, when I look back on it, I want to remember this flight with pride," Capt Littlely said. . .. ."Ansett has been fantastic for me and it is disappointing to see it end in such a tragic set of circumstances." . .. .He said he was not angry with businessmen Lindsay Fox and Solomon Lew for failing to resurrect the airline. . .. ."I believe they did want to get the airline up and running," Capt Littlely said. "I can't believe they would spend so much time and effort for no reward. The feeling in the pilot group is that the Federal Government has a lot to answer for." . .. .He said if it had been Qantas in trouble, the Government would have produced its chequebook and asked, "How much do you need?" . .. ."It was lip-service to help Ansett achieve a second status. I really do believe Fox and Lew could have gone out and given it a good shake." . .. .As for the redundancy package guaranteed by the Government, Capt Littlely said every Ansett employee would give it up "in an instant" for the chance to work for the company again. . .. ."We all just wanted to stay and get Ansett back up and running," he said. . .. .Capt Littlely, who grew up in Perth, joined Ansett 12 years ago and became a captain three years later. . .. .He said he was fortunate he had been able to continue flying since the airline was first grounded last September. . .. ."Obviously I was very disappointed with the news this week that the bid to save Ansett had failed," he said. . .. ."I have gone through the anger and frustration and now I will probably let the dust settle before deciding what I do next." . .. .He doubts there will be a job for him at Qantas. . .. ."And if there was, I would have to go back to being a second officer," he said. . .. ."The Qantas system would not take me in as a captain and I would be looking at probably another 10-15 years before I got back to where I am now. . .. ."If Virgin Blue expanded, perhaps there might be something there. I don't know. . .. ."The next step for me would be to work internationally, but since September 11 there are not as many jobs for pilots, so I really don't know what we will do." . .. .For the moment Capt Littlely said he would spend some time with wife, Lucy, and their children Lucas, 3 and Greta, four months. . .. ."As of Tuesday morning I am unemployed, but I am not worried," he said. . .. ."We will just go back to Perth. My mum and dad and Lucy's parents are there and we know they will open their hearts and homes to us. . .. ."We have fantastic family support. Everything will work out.". . . . [ 03 March 2002, 09:33: Message edited by: Wirraway ]

"... next step for me would be to work internationally, but since September 11 there are. . not as many jobs for pilots..." . .. .In any reputable international carrier, there will hopefully never be a job for Ansett scabs.

Sad, but rather apt, that the last AN flight was an 'heroic' one...

Along with some 1,300 other ex Australian domestic pilots, our families and friends, I too shall break open a bottle of champagne to celebrate his, and Ansett's, last flight!

I have read a lot about the 89 dispute and I have to say that no matter what happened all those years ago as a pilot I am thoroughly disgusted with some of these comments on this thread about this pilot facing redundancy in the near future.. .. .I would suggest that some of you stop living in the past and get on with your lives, maybe it is you that are not fit to be flying in commercial cockpits with views like these. I certainally hope to god I never find myself as a pax in your aircraft.

And I suggest to you Amazon man that you stop preaching to others and realise that the cuts go very deep.

And may I suggest to you bargearse that you do like wise.. .. .I am lucky not to be in Ansett and have no connection with 1989, but having followed these columns for some time, would have to say that most of the vitriol, anger and language has come from people such as yourself.. .. .How about for the next few weeks, you just refrain from posting and let the Ansett employees go in dignity.. .. .They deserve that.. .. .The readers of this forum deserve that.. .. .Have a nice day.

Thanks Strobes.. .. .You have succeeded in exposing the weakness in my post. . .. .I've advised myself to take your advice and no longer shall I advise others to not advise everyone else on how they should be advised.. .. .I advise a rethink on this peice of advice as it may be construed as pure drival.... or something like that.. . . . [ 03 March 2002, 21:45: Message edited by: Bargearse ]

To all that ex-AN staff our thoughts are with you at this time. Life does go on and in time the light at the end of the tunnel will shine brighter again. . .To those "wonderful" pilots who joined AN 12 years ago well what goes around comes around, and it is just a shame that so many innocents were taken down also.. .Although my memories are of many ground staff that laughted and taunted my family as we sold our home and my husband went overseas so we could continue with our lives. . .It is all called Karma. . .Those who are innocent, stand together, support each other and most importantly of all talk to each other and your families.. .Take care all.. .Vale Ansett.

Onya Captain Mark Littlely!!! I don't know you, but you seem like a decent bloke, and one who could make a decision when required, not another bloody lemming who followed the leader over the cliff.. .. .Don't worry, and I'm sure you're not, about getting a job overseas. You'll run into tragic small brained people who will whisper 'scab' hoping you don't hear it and belt them around the ears. They'll achieve their small minded satisfaction though, and tell their mates over a beer that night that they belittled another f#@$&^* Ansett scab. 'We really gave it to him, and he cowered in the corner', they'll say. But who gives a $hit? Not you or many others. . .. .In view of the tragic, infantile attitudes displayed here by the 89ers (are they a baseball team or something?) I believe my time can be much more profitably spent elsewhere.. .. .I've said it before, and I say it for the last time, I was what you jerks termed a scab, proud to go back and work in Australia for a further 8 years, and now overseas. . .. .Your haranguing and harrassing did not stop Ansett; rather it was just incompetent management. If you think otherwise, then you're misguided. Sad.. .. .Additionally, I have difficulty, intellectually, mixing it with bottom feeders at the shallow end of the gene pool. Most of the 89ers seem to have little education, and probably a few others as well, but particularly Kaptin M whose misuse of highlighting, parenthesis, general construction and punctuation do little to elevate him above the IQ of a moron.. .. .Somebody had to tell you. Respond if you wish, but it won't be read.. . . . [ 03 March 2002, 23:28: Message edited by: Kaptin_X ]

What will the former "Captain" do now he has no more captive audiences to tell of his incredible abilities as an aviator (that was why he was the captain of course). With this article adorning the crew room walls of so many airlines, his concern should not be about never working for an airline in Australia, but never working for an airline fullstop. No doubt the former members of his captive audience will also help pass the word. . .. .At least I'll have a well qualified cab driver when I'm next in Perth. .. .Kaptin X- you are what the world calls a sc%b.. . . . [ 03 March 2002, 23:28: Message edited by: Karunch ]

Words fail to express the disgust I feel for those degenerates who derive perverse enjoyment and pleasure in the sadness and loss of income of 16,000 Australians.. .. .You are a disgrace to your profession, your industry and this Nation. May you rot forever in your overseas hell!
