Amusing waypoint names
OK let's lighten things up again here.
There was a thread either here or elsewhere a while back listing amusing waypoint names worldwide. One set I recall went something along the lines of EENEY MEENY MINEY MOEEE in the U.S.??
SW of Perth there are the remnants of the Three Stooges, STUGE & SHEMP. I recall there were more, but I think they disappeared when the routes were truncated when random RNAV came in over the Indian Ocean.
Also, in Tassie there was a waypoint TOOMS, but when the route was amended to reflect a racetrack or route reversal it became SMOOT

There was of course GAFFA out west of Alice Springs in the Great Australian F.F@#$ All.
Or Moovi, overhead Movieworld inbound to Brissy.
Seksi, Nipil, Pokir and Bigun are in the vicinity of Manila.

Moderate, Modest & Mild.
There's one in Manila oceanic named SEKSI and another nearby named NIPIL....]..."Roger, copy that - over NIPIL, call me SEKSI."
There was a third one in the same area - the name escapes me at the moment - which was Tagalog for #*ck.
There used to be one in Japanese airspace called REBEL, but because of the mix-ups with the "L's" and "R's" by the local controllers, it was causing too many problems when foreign carriers were directed to report REBEL and invariably the reply immediately came back as a FL
GAFFA was of course one of the better known ones in Oz!

The other three stoges waypoints west of Perth were,
LARRY, CURLEY and MOE
From memory out at 150 PH on the Capetown Mauritius and Jo Berg tracks.
Out of Dilli to ICUMA is MAMAL, the other track to Dilli is via HUMAN.
WOOFA always gets a laugh (080/80DN)
Suposedly all waypoint names are chosen by a computer (or such) program used by AsA. NOT

'Bambi'-'Alone' (CV-W356-OK)
'Ovens', between Taroom & Emerald, where there is 3/5 of sod-all except heat & flies; then 'Hotta' abeam Winton, where even the flies give it away as a bad joke, across to 'Midel' (of nowhere, south of Isa).....
Who designates the names anyway? I'm sure we could come up with some suitable ones if given an opportunity
Regards

I recall two waypoints in WA in the early eighties - CRONIN and GLOVER - during the Parramatta Rugby League Dynasty. Don't know if they're still there.
Some GA pilots have also used some geographical locations to report position with particular relish. The Coastwatch drivers out of Gove were particularly keen on Warra****a Point, with you can guess what emphasis.
Marauder, if my memory serves me correctly there were several waypoints over northern waters changed from their "fish" names in the late seventies -Toadfish became Torex (maybe via TODIX?), Batfish/Butpa, Globefish/Gulob. Some others, which I have forgotten.
cheers.

one out of BNE "swollow" a female NJ pilot made the mistake of asking to be cleared direct to .... The controller to his credit didn't miss a beat and replied "cleared to swollow" the silence was golden.

As for the naming "convention" for waypoints. For quite some years now, waypoints on international routes have been supplied from ICAO's computers. Prior to this and, indeed, for all domestic routes, waypoints names are assigned by AsA. Prior to the separation of CASA and AsA, the names were assigned by CAA/DOTA/DCA or whatever other name/s the regulator has been known by.
The basic principle used, which is the same one that I follow, is to first try to find some prominent geographic feature and use that name. Failing that, you need to get inventive and, as we all know, sometimes this has been VERY creative.
Anyway, thanks to this thread, I've got a whole bunch of new names to use! The first one that I really must use is SWOLLOW!

I wish I could say I have flown over some of these waypoints, but sadly it's not the case.
Some of my personal favs which I came across while doing Flight Planning recently are LONLY, the first waypoint west of ADL in the Great Australian Bight, which would be a pretty lonely place at the best of times. Around there is also HYDRA, pretty fitting considering there's a sh*tload of water out there.
SHARK, MARLN, WHALE, PRAWN into Sydney is pretty good value as well.
My all time fav though is BEZZA, those who know me can appreciate that one.
Cheers,
TL

I'm not sure where it is, maybe Salt Lake City, but the outer marker is called SANND and the middle marker is BUNKR...
Also a GPS approach, again in America, with initial, intermediate, final and missed approach fixes called ITAWT, ITAWA, PUDDE, TAATT.

A few more named after various ATC persons. Scrana ( or something very similar) Hodda and Woody. There was another one contemplated when herself was running the school but I can't remember if it went to print.

Gove to Tindal Track has the waypoints DUMPA & TRUKA. Remember when I flew around brissy there was one called POODL. Overheard BN APP trying to direct a foreign carrier to track via it without much luck.
I wonder who it could have possibly been who got the one about 15 nm S of Townsville on the LLZ called SATCO?
Could make for some interesting exchanges:
"All arriving flights will have to go through SATCO"
"No way, I've heard he's got some nasty diseases!"
etc.
