Post Looking for PNG Pilot from way back.

Some of you Expat guys might help me find out who the pilot was that got me interested in flying. He used to fly an Aztec out of Rabaul in the early 70's. He looked to be about 6ft, blonde or grey hair, always wore cowboy style boots, and I think had a dutch name. If you said it I would recognise the name. If it's any help the Aztec either belonged to or was on contract to Conzinc Rio Tinto. Excuse the spelling if its not right. I remember another F27 FO by the name of Franz Staffenhoffer but that wasn't him. Just interested!!!!!

Cool

Sounds a bit like Fred, however he was not as tall as described. Anyway, FM is still in POM with his local lady. Ask "Chimbu Chuckles" or "ozexpat" for the name of the book written on PNG Aviation. Fred along with numerous others gets a mention. The photos will help a lot to identify your '70s pilot. E' me if you wish.
Cheers,
Aus'

Cool

In the 1970's Dangerous Dave was involved in personal gross weight increase testing of C402's and Bandits, not Aztecs.

I don't remember an Aztec in Rabaul in the 70's, unless Panga had ex Crowley aircraft there until about 1976 or 1977. I think Ron Firns had a couple of Aztecs in Port Moresby.

"Personel gross weight increase testing"
Now that's an interesting term, I'll have to remember that one ! Does this mean you stop drinking heaps of white cans, lose weight, and carry more in tha Balus (Naaaa,I don't think so).

I was thinking of Ron Firns, until you mentioned the Dutch name. Also, I'm pretty sure he'd have been more likely to dissuade people from a flying career... it almost worked with me... <img src="eek.gif" border="0">

Sounds like it might have been Wren Fennamore. Last I heard he had retired from flying and had a travel agency in Darwin.
