Post TUG COMP........

Who has the fastest most agile best prestented tug in Australia???

Yes we are bored and our TUG is comming along nicely, it now has bite (i know I have just scored three lovely love bites from ours)..... Can your tug get sideways on the tarmac??? Yes it will pull the nose leg straight out of the Chieftain.....

This post might be better in an engineers forum but...... We just love our TUG....

Cheers,

HA and drinking pilots.....

Ahhh...sorry mate, at first glance I thought you were talking about some kind of rude soggy biscuit competition!

Not that I've ever been anywhere near one of those, I'm glad to say.

So it's Tow Motors we're talking about!

High Altitude
Kendell Engineering in Sydney has whats known as the "ROCKET".
Ford 4.1 ltr, never used to have a govener on it till about 2 yrs ago.
MATE!!! it Bloody Flys!
Change of diff and its a screamer.
She likes to drift at high speed though.
I set many an acceleration record in it.
On wet days with a particularly heavy GPU behind, it would spin the wheels if you floored it.
HA HA many a shift of fun.
What are the details of yours?

Here's a little idea I've just had:
Find an airport that has more than 1 or 2 tugs, and organise a tug derby as a fun day out, a-la bed races, that sort of thing. It could raise a little money for charity, bruise a few ego's, and generally provide a fun day for all. HA, I'd be guessing that your airport might be rather suitable for the inaugural "Tug-off" .
You could have other side events like luggage trolley "dash for cash", whereby the trolley has to arrive fully loaded with, say, 6-7 people on it, pulled by the company owner/manager/CP. With some of the form around the place, I think you guys/gals might be wise to hit the training schedule ASAP! If someone were to lend a potential ATC team a trolley, things could really get funky!
Maybe try a catering esky relay, guess the freight weight competition, or used aircraft tyre discus.
any ideas for potential prizes??

Ahh Yeaahhh
How could I forget the lifting of the wheels!!!
HA HA HA Sounds like you've had fun also.
Too bloody easy to roll ,nearly had it happen on a few occasions.
Always thought my escape would be to jump clear as she went over.Luckily never happened though.
Those Nissan diesels just don't have the same character.
Hasting Deering at Lidcombe built a very enjoyable "tow motor".

Cool

4.1 litre ford power, man, it must go. Ours only has a corolla motor in it with a 4 speed box but it is painted like a Qld police car.

Lackov, a reliable source informs me that your initial idea of a Derby day has actually already been floated......

It's called Tullamarine Tarmac, any given working day, any given time

Cheers

Thumbs up

What about a tug "tug-o-war"? You just have to fit a jockey wheel to the draw bar to stop an "inadvertant over-rotation" (without the correct airspeed ) and a bit of chain tying them together at their drawbars.

Have heard tales of a certain person toying with the idea of removing aforesaid castiron head 4.1 and b/w-35 gearbox and fitting a 302 (windsor) and stubbie C4 to the orange rocket. I would kill to watch him kill himself, but will probably give-in to temptation if it ever sees the light of day.

Ever done a "rollback"? Going flat out in reverse (all of about 5 k's an hour), then drop her into drive with full boot and hang on! One of two things can happen - ya bust it, or the most gynormous wheel stand out of the hangar at around twenty k's an hour.

Not that I've EVER done anything so damn childish of course!!!!

Ford V8, not sure if its a 302 or 351 here at Cairns. Is, or used to be called "Interceptor"
Has done a lot of sitting lately, must be the cost of keeping petrol up to it.

I must have missed something. I thought the only tug Kendell had in Sydney was ‘Thomas the Tank Engine,’ which is used for CRJ pushbacks, and that’s certainly not a race winner. Couldn’t pull the skin off a rice pudding, as the saying goes. Even has trouble on gradients to the extent that pushing a CRJ off some bays on DOM1 is almost beyond it – and we know how much of a slope there is there!

I left before they started with the CRJ's In SYD.
Could imagine though thats the case.
The Rocket no longer there?
Finally fed up with expensive repairs from AN GSE.

GWYN,

Believe it or not, Thomas the Tank Engine was used in a previous life to tow caravans (not the Cessna type) around a Caravan park. Methinks a CRJ weighs a little more than a Millard! The only problem with the pushbacks is when they start engines - it just doesn't have the grunt! Surely it has the best paint job on the airport though!

Overboosta,

The Rocket still exists, although with the governor it doesn't perform anything quite like it used to apparently. GI and DH often remind me of the "good old days."

Cheers,
TL

TL: Yep I can believe the previous history. As I understand it, engines have to be started after disconnect for that reason, but even with the engines not running it still has problems on some bays. I'll agree, it is the cutest tug on the airfield though!

I remember once trying out our new monster tug equipped with big v6 detroit diesel, heading flat out towards the Tulla maint base
on the N/S taxiway. When it was time to turn at the bottom nothing happened & we went careering off across a paddock towards TAA's "mound". The look on my mates face who goaded me into it was worth the effort. His already grey hair turned white within days.

HA,
Your chief tug mechanic seems to be a rev head of old. I have seen the damage done from last weekends rampage on the tarmac out front-very impressive!! I didn't know that 3 tonnes of iron with double rear tyres could spin so easily.
I believe that he still has some more tricks up his sleeve including a 350 or larger with turbo 400? ? Is this true, we may have to buy/borrow him off you to get a little more suck from our lame assed tugs.

Line lock to the end!!
