Cool JAA compared to AUS ATPL

I was just wondering if anyone knew what the JAA is and how it compares to an aussie ATPL or if it is covered under ICAO or is something completely new only in the UK.

any help would be appreciated

Mate, I can quite honestly say it is an absolute nightmare compared to the Australian ATPL.
It certainly isn't harder, in a few areas the knowledge depth is less, however the sheer vast quantity of useless knowledge is incredible. Also, you basicly have to do 650 ground theory hours. That equates to 6 months of ground school.
Having said that, I have got the 7 "Nav" exams, now doing the 7 "techs".
For once the UK CAA isn't to blame.

The UK licence is demanding and not very user friendly but far easier than the JAA it appears....loads of jobs here compared to the *****ed OZZIE/Kiwi pilot market.

Good luck..where else can you get a job on a 757 with 200 hours?

Question

redsnail and Shaggy,

You obviously seem to be doing something along these lines.
I have an Aust. CPL with ATPL subjects and am trying to find out some info on this topic.
Who did you contact ?
What is involved ?
How much does it cost ?
How long does it take ?
What Aust. licence did/do you hold before starting the "conversion" ?
Is there practical testing/training aswell ? (Presume so)
If so what's involved ?(ie. two crew ops ??)

Any info would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Chucka'

G'day Chucka,
I used PPRuNe as my main source of info plus I did a recce to the UK last year. It is vital that you check the CAA-SRG website for accurate and up to date details.
I had a full Australian ATPL with over 1000 hours multi crew turbine experience. It is very important to have at least 500 hours two pilot operations (very useful if it is in a FAR 25 aircraft- ways around if you don't).
If you have a CPL with IR and "only" piston time it will be very very expensive.
All the JAA ATPL subjects must be done + the UK IR must be done again. I think you get about 5 hours off a 55 hour course.
If you do the theory in the UK, the flying MUST be done in the UK, at least the flight test any way. See below for costs.

If you have a full Australian ATPL with 500 hours or more in two crew/pilot operations.
You need:
Class One medical issued in Gatwick (initial).
All 14 JAA ATPL exams passed. You must do a theory course. If you don't have an ATPL it is 650 hours, if you do, then it is about 350 hours. (Not a good idea to cut it short)

If you are in current two pilot operations and have 500 hours on that type then all you need to do flying wise is a check ride with a CAA approved examiner.
If you are not in current flying ops, then you need to do a two pilot type rating and then a check ride with a CAA approved examiner.
Costs
Medical at Gatwick £189 (ATPL holder)
$400 if not.
Theory £3600 approx
Exams £718 resits £37 each if required
Budget 6 months theory £100/week
IR ranges from £9000 to £13000
No idea for CPL, add about £3-5000 or so
If you don't have 500 hours two crew, you may need an MCC rating £2-4000
Cheapest type rating I know of £4000 on a Shed. (ie a lot cheaper than having to do the IR again-ATPL holders only)
There is some more info in the Wannabes section.

Thanks reddo,
From travels over there last year, I knew it was pretty involved but trying to find out the specifics was difficult.
Sound expensive, especially seeings as how I broke at the moment. Can't even afford to pay attention !!
Best of luck with your endeavours and thanks again for the info'.
cheers chuck.
