Post Ok who did it, who tried to land on Anzac Hwy?!

Channel nine newsbreak in Adelaide stated that there was no concern about approaches to Adelaide Airport despite an incident involving an Ansett jet apparently setting up an approach for landing on the Anzac Hwy.

Is this another case of the media being full of, um, vegemite slush?

Surely its not possible, although i did once hear about a foreign airline having a go at the Stuart Hwy on approach to Darwin.

mmmmmm.......

It was CZX and has been on the ATSB website for quite a while. Must be another slow news day.

Not exactly new either, same thing happened more than once when Tullamarine first opened, Aircraft lined up for the Tullamarine Freeway instead of the runway......

Channel Ten just had it on the news, right at the end too, and said that the crew were absolved of any responsiblity and that it was caused by poor lighting. I have to admit I'm surprised at Channel 10's unbiased reporting on Ansett this time.

Yes you could say it was an unbiased report but quite frankly the resident who they interviewed who was saying "Well this is not on, one day one of them is going to PILE on in to these houses and cause a DISASTER" I mean come on, he was'nt exactly an informed interviewee was he. Anyway so be it, thats why Australian Aviation is so safe, the crew inadvertently lined up towards a road in poor vis and immediately recognised the error with an FO comment about being full scale on the VOR (It was a VOR/DME by memory) This in itself shows the professionalism and experience of Australian aircrews, not some rubbish about aircraft are going to be plowing into everyones backyard.........Yawn.....

Not reflecting on anyone here but one point worth mentioning which may help avoid similar occurrences would be to consider what setting the runway lights were on. Quite often they are not on maximum and at a much lower intensity that adjacent highway lighting.
Nothing wrong with the crew requesting tower to switch to maximum intensity to help earlier acquisition and identification of the runway even when visibility is "good?" . Can always ask for reduction of intensity when appropriate. Same goes for day operations in adverse conditions.
This is not to excuse that a better approach procedure should be provided along with better lighting where possible. As previously mentioned Adelaide is not the only airport where this possibility exists. There are several others.

Exclamation

It could be about time that they put approach lights on Runway 05, or some sort of lead-in strobe lights.

Stuff happens, it shouldn't reflect poorly on the crew as a whole....stuff happens.

That's why the approach road to Perth International Terminal has a curve in it to stop the begininings of a Faux Pause, as it is Parallel to 21/03.
If they look alike you always get the wrong one once in a while.
