Yes it created quite a stir because UA had booked pax beyond Jan 1. However the govt. had only allowed the carriage of domestic pax until jan 1 when it would be reviewed (though most airlines expected the rights to be renewed. This did not happen, so UA has had to rebook these pax. On virgin apparently (so much as to supporting Ansett!)

Yankee 4 - why "bold face" Star Alliance? Do you think just because Ansett is a participating Company in Star Alliance that they will automatically get on travel from other alliance Airlines?
Welcome to the world of corporate reality Mate!
Ansett has done nothing, thus far,to instil consumer confidence. They have a potential owner who bares his ass at Company meetings and have just appointed a CEO whom is known in the industry (thus far) as no more than a "wild card" and no certainty that it will be up and running on the 31st January. There is a lot of bad morale in the Company at the moment due to "culling " of pilots and other staff "cut loose" due to downscaling operations.
Would you , YANKEE 4 , given the above facts, give your loyal customers over to Ansett or go with Virgin?

As far as I am aware Ansett MKII will not be a Star Alliance airline. I think I remember reading somewhere that they may consider it in the future, but they won't be a member initially.
United therefore can choose any airline (out of the other two) they like to send the domestic pax on.

Virgin Blue will not join the Star Alliance as their operation doesn't meet the credentials to become a Star Alliance member...that being operating a Business Class service/Frequent Flyer Scheme/Airport Lounges etc etc.
Whiskery...
I was merely implying that as Ansett were alliance members before the collapse, UA would have transferred pax to AN. But like you said passengers won't have as much confidence in AN now so VB might be a better option for the pax.
