From ABC online:

Skyhooks lead singer dies in chopper crash

Police have confirmed the former lead singer of seventies pop group, Skyhooks, has died in a helicopter crash north-west of Brisbane.

Channel Nine presenter Graeme "Shirley" Strachan was killed this afternoon, when the helicopter he was flying crashed during a training flight, on Mount Archer, near Kilcoy.

Redcliffe Police Sergeant Frank Sparreboom says the 49-year-old entertainer was reported missing by his training school.

Police say Mr Strachan's body will not be retrieved until tomorrow morning because of the remoteness of the crash site.

Condolances to family and all that knew him. He certainly was a character and from what i heard he really did set Australian music alight during the 70's and 80's.

For those in Melb, Gold 104 (104.3FM) are having a Skyhooks special from 9pm AEST, most of their live concerts. I just wish i had been old enough to have gone to a concert or two.

I waited in much anticipation when i heard the rumour that Skyhooks were reforming for the last time at the Mushroom 25th Anniversary concert and i had tickets. Unfortunately they didnt make it and now there will be no more.

I guess it makes us all think exactly how mortal we really are and no one, no matter how popular or well liked lives forever.

May you rest in peace Shirls and may we all continue to "live in the 70's" with those "women in uniform" while watching all our "friends get married".

Well if there is a GOD Shirley is bound to be there soon.

Im sure GOD will enjoy having someone can knock him up a few pantry and bathroom cupboards.

As long as he doesnt play that Skyhooks music too loud.

RIP Shirley.

I really now know how Elvis fans felt. I grew up with them, have 2 of every Skyhooks album (one set to use, one set sealed in plastic and NEVER touched). And believe it or not, I played the "Ego is not a Dirty Word" album in the car, on the way to work this morning.

Confirm he was solo?

The news didn't mention anyone else in the aircraft but I thought it might just be them zeroing in on his celebrity status and missing out on mentioning anyone else because of that.

Anyway, sad to hear it.

Condolances to Sue family and friends. As another kid who grew up with Shirls neighbourhood, then later showing us the simple pleasures one gets from creating something. For some he also was the lotto man....

I never really figured out the wording of the skyhooks song "twisties in the back row of the movie show" until a couple of years ago but they were a band way ahead of their time.

Shirl as per nineMSN report was flying a Bell 47 on a solo nav when according to a witness decended almost vertically. He was believed to have crashed at 4pm Wed afternoon.

Vale Shirl
