The following comes from another website:
While monitoring the flight on the scanner during it's descent on
125.7 the controller passed on a message to the pilots regarding the
condition of their landing gear.Apparently on departure from their
last port of call the aircraft had taken out some approach lights and
a localiser antenna with the landing gear!ATC organised for the IL-86
to make a flypast over the runway at 500ft for a visual inspection
which confirmed everything was normal, however a ground vehicle did
report seeing some tyre damage on the left main gear.ATC then vectored
the aircraft for a left circuit VOR/DME approach back onto RWY34.The
landing was normal and the aircraft vacated to a right taxiway where
it was met by emergency services for an escort to the gate.
Further to the IL-86 incident, during my lunch break from Gate 35 duties
today I managed to have a close up look at the underside and main
undercarriage of this aircraft. Suffice to say the damage to the underside
would not induce one to fly this airline, with the rear fuselage skin
penetrated, plainly evident where several holes had been temporarily taped
over from behind the wing, all the way back to the tail!. Worst of all,
several tyres on the main gear were worn down to the canvas ribbing!! All of
them exhibited cracks and splits well beyond what would be considered safe
by Australian standards. There was also damage around the landing gear
struts.
I'm told by a reliable source at the airport that CASA has banned the
aircraft from departing YMML until these problems are fixed. Apparently the
captain, on inspecting the damage, said "no problem, we fly aircraft in this
condition all the time", or words to that effect in Russian!!! Such is their
cavalier attitude to such matters.

I've been listening to the ABC news and it appears that this aircraft has been chartered to lift construction supplies to Christmas/Cocos Island.
I dont know whether this incident occurred on returning for another load or whether it subsequently departed afterwards.
The above described sounds quite plausible from what I hear.
What is the Government doing chartering the equivalent of the Liberian registered rust buckets crewed by slave labour, that we wont let near our coast and ports??

Gaunty,
Not often I think you may be wrong, but my Melbourne sources tell me this aircraft is supposed to becarrying the Kirov Ballet.
I remeber flying 707s which were covered in speedtape, but nothing as exciting as this.

The said aircraft brought in the Kirov Opera for the Melbourne Festival (us engineers are up on these arty things ).
I went down for a gander last week when it arrived and got a tour - these things are huge inside, complete with wooden bannisters for the internal starways. Also features a most interesting smell inside.
Flight deck is like stepping back 50 years - except for the KLN90 stuck on top of the glareshield and TCAS displays.
Some fairly substantial gashes along the side of the fuse under the rear cargo door. They were changing a few wheels while I was there.
They are due to be departing on Nov 17.

The acft you describe is commonly reffered to as a Russian Piece of Sh*t and they are found busily flying in places all over the "lesser travelled" parts of the world.
Give the drivers their due though, as i can guarantee they have seen and done stuff that would make most CASA-fearing Aussie pilots shake in their shiny shoes.
Sounds like it was in good nick though...

Are you sure it's an IL86 ? This is a relatively modern type , similar in appearance to an A340 Airbus .If it's carrying freight it's more likely to be a IL76 ,high wing four engine ,similar to a BAE 146 on steroids.

Is this the same brute that took off from Perth a couple of days back spewing great plumes of smog all over the sky? Ive never seen a skywriter writing in brown before but this thing made a huge black streak across the sky that lingered for about 10minutes, it took off towards the north west anyway amd it was an antonov or illuysion or whatever. Anyway this ba$tard was impressive.

Could you be thinking of the IL96 which is a
much more recent model & isn't as Soviet looking as its IL86 counterpart.
Range is nowhere as good as an A340 though.
Cheers

I saw an IL76 roar out of Sydney last week...took off with a 15kt t/w off 16R. At first I thought he must have been light, then I was thinking is 4000m gonna be enough, finally I was shocked that it managed to clear Kurnell.

Fair Nuff they must have anothery floating aorund, they sure need the dollars and don't think all that much of it goes into maintenance.
I just assumed it was the same one.

Speaking of the russkies there has been a big assed Antonov 124 flying in and out of Darwin recently doing charters. Same sort of thing, 146 on steroids. Should see the towbar setup it has to accomodate the twin nose gear!!
