NZ voted safest dest...Is ANZ going to take advantage
From NZOOM.COM
C.C.M to take advantage of New Zealand's safest destination status
New Zealand has recently been voted the safest country to visit by readers of two top travel magazines in the UK, and given recent world tragedy's, Christchurch & Canterbury Marketing plan to take full advantage.
Readers of UK magazine 'Wanderlust' have voted New Zealand the 'safest country' ahead of Australia and Canada, while in the September edition of Conde Nast Traveller, New Zealand scored highest in the safety component of their own questionnaire at 94.7%.
"These results provide an excellent opportunity for New Zealand to build on its safe haven status in light of recent world events," Christchurch & Canterbury Marketing Chief Executive Darryll Park said.
"While the terrorism violence was incredibly unfortunate, and the visitor industry is in uncertain times, we must also treat this as an opportunity to best maximise New Zealand's status of an isolated, 100% pure, and above all, safe destination."
Mr Park says there are good opportunities within the Asian market, especially Japan.
"Japan is the second largest economy in the world, and the wealthiest on a per capita basis. Their outbound travel is growing, and in the wake of recent world events its outbound industry is looking to reposition its business."
Mr Park says Christchurch & Canterbury Marketing is well positioned to capitalise on this change of focus.
"We are the only Regional Tourism Organisation in New Zealand with a dedicated Asia - Japan Marketing Manager, which puts us in a very strong position. This Japanese dedicated C.C.M resource has already been discovering business that is prepared to refocus from the US to us in New Zealand."
"Air New Zealand is looking at repositioning some of its 747 aircraft capacity currently operating from LA," he said.
This means Air New Zealand has the opportunity to utilise the extra capacity out of Japan that was made available with a bi-lateral governmental agreement between the New Zealand and Japanese governments earlier this year, he said.
"This is just one of the opportunities that we are driving, and you can be sure that C.C.M is working hard to see that Christchurch and Canterbury is positioned to reap the benefits."
My Bit
The article is not totally related to aviation although there is a little snippet about Air NZ. Are there any thoughts on whether or not Air NZ might consider flying to the UK via Asia instead LA to boost customer confidence?

From the Wanderlust web site........
(QUOTE)
Where is it safe to travel?
New Zealand has always been considered a great destination for a safe trip and this has now been confirmed by Wanderlust readers, who have just voted it the World’s Safest Country.
And despite the recent suspected abduction and murder of English tourist Peter Falconi, readers of Wanderlust magazine also still consider Australia to be one the world’s safest countries.
In a major survey conducted for the Wanderlust Reader Awards 2001, Australia came second to New Zealand in the Safest Country category, followed by Canada in third.
Afghanistan only scored one vote in the survey, conducted before the tragic events of September 11. Although the issue of travel safety is currently under review as a result of these events, it is clear that readers of Wanderlust feel safest Down Under.
Lyn Hughes, editor of Wanderlust, said, “The vast majority of people who go there have such a good time and don’t feel threatened at all. In the days following the terrorist attacks on America, safety is now the most important issue in travel. Countries that can convince travellers they are safe will benefit in a time when we are all looking for reassurance.”
Andrew Richards, the Australian Tourist Commission’s European director, admitted that, due to the current instability, the number of bookings was much lower than hoped for at this time of year. “Perversely, when it’s resolved, Australia could be a beneficiary in the long term because it’s seen as a safe country,” he said.

Tourism NZ has its work cut out. 75% of North America have never heard of NZ.
More power to them though. If they can boost the ailing economy through increased tourists then more power to them.
If things pick up we all may be encouraged to come home....

Wong. I would have thought so. I am also quite sure that there are a number of potential customers who would fly Air NZ over most other carriers for safety's sake if nothing else. I am sure that their image of a country will in some way rub off on to the carrier that serves it. Air NZ should take FULL advantage. Whether they will or not is another story altogether.

Would be good to see you back too.
We just have to get these politicians of ours to start putting some heat on these foriegn operators to hire NZ crews.
Starting to get annoyed with the uneven playing field in this part of the world.

Wish you well guys, as an Aussie who recently had a brilliant holiday on the south island, you have the product, you have the customer service skills, (in my humble opinion the best I have experienced anywhere in the world), just be careful how you promote this one.
In times where terror is on everyones mind, to gloat about being "the safest" could be waving a red rag at a bull. If terrorists want to cause maximum fear with one act, they would logically choose a target that symbolises safety. If someone is running around gloating "We are the safest!!!" they would obtain maximum exposure. The world would then be thinking "nowhere is safe" and this is the goal of terrorist organisations. My advice, do it tactfully without drawing attention to this particular issue...

Just visited that site again, and YES New Zealand was voted the safest place to visit, just ahead of Australia and then Canada.
Did a little more looking at the awards though, and guess which is the most popular City in the World to visit?

1. Sydney, Australia 94.6 (12th)
2. Cuzco, Peru 94.5 (1st)
3. San Francisco, USA 94.3 (3rd)
4. Prague, Czech Republic 93.0 (5th)
5. Venice, Italy 92.8 (2nd)
6. Cape Town, South Africa 92.5 (14th)
7. Havana, Cuba 92.2 (23rd)
8. Krakow, Poland 92.0 (–
