How is the scene in Aus/NZ?
Hi there,
I am a Canadian pilot who would like to live and work in Australia or New Zealand in the future. I understand that there are more pilots than jobs down there at the present time and the last thing I want to do is steal jobs from the locals. That's just not fair! Maybe someone could give me some imformation on where the industry is headed down there and maybe an idea of how
complicated it is to immigrate to Australia or New Zealand.
Cheers

The industry is, in a word, fuct
It will probably improve again eventually, but I would suggest now is not the best time to be making the move. Things will be stagnant for a while - no progression means no holes at the bottom for GA drivers, no holes for regionals, and given the events of the previous month no holes at the top either!!

The way things are at the moment just hang on to your job for now.
Things here in Aus as you know by now are not too good with the collapse of Ansett but things will improve so hang in there.

Case drain, "...just hang in there."
"...things will improve."
Although I don't doubt that "things will improve" eventually, if you think that things aren't going to get a hell of a lot worse than they are at the moment then you're in for a hell of a shock.
GA operators have been using the "pilots are a dime a dozen" line for years now and just as things were looking to be heading the pilots way, the whole industry falls on it's @rse.
Award wages/rates of pay ??
What are they ?
You'll be told " You're now working for this, take it or leave it. Here's a stack of resumes of unemployed pilots willing to do it for that/less/free."
I hope I'm wrong, I really really do, but I have a felling in the pit of my stomach that these things are going to start happening soon.
A message to the newbies and the desperate.
DON'T PROSTITUTE YOURSELVES OR THE INDUSTRY, DON'T WORK FOR LESS THAN AWARD, AND DON'T SHAFT EACH OTHER.
Things will improve, planes will always need to be piloted, if you're a 20 yr old starting out in the industry in about 10 years times, you'll be in a good position.
