Post Best place OZ-wide for MECIR

Seeking advice on a reputable organistaion that does ME/CIR. Must been in a place that offers sh!t weather, ML/SY/BN perhaps. Last thing I want to do, is do the whole rating with a hood up!

If a quality rating is what you're after give Bob Harris in Innisfail a call. If crudy weather is what you seek there is no shortage of it in that neck of the woods. I think his company is Hinchinbrook Air Charter but I may be wrong. He's a top bloke with a long history in the training scene. Equipment is above par and a beer or two on fridee arvo is mandatory. Price is good also. Be prepared to work hard as most of the work with any rating rests on your shoulders not the 'weather' or 'hood' or the person teaching you. If you're learning to fly instruments a combination of clear skies and soup is a good thing.
Good luck with it but ultimately shop around and compare everything ie. price and you're initial impressions. More often than not the less expensive course is just as good if not better than the course that is a little inflated in cost. I"m sure you'll get good feedback from your post either way.

Check out Johnston Aviation Service at Port Macquarie on the NSW North Coast. This is a very professional outfit who specalise in ME/CIR. They use a great B58 for the multi engine part and a really nice Bonanza fot the single engine stage. There and numerous airports in the area Tamworth/Coffs/Willy/Kempsey/Armidale etc and all only an hour in the B58. Prices is about as low as you can expect for a IR and Instructors are career instructors who are dedicated to their job. You also get your share of weather in this neck of the woods with the mountains just to the west of the area. Check out their web page or give them a call as they will forward you an excellent brochure. www.johnstonaviation.com.au
Certainly check out as many as you can but I can recommend JAS from personal experience.
Best of luck and be prepared for some hard work.

Hey S.S.C.B.D
Whats your problem buddy,
A guy asks a question and I try to answer his question from my personal experience and off you go. If you actually take the time to read my posting I suggest he try them all and make up his own mind.

Thumbs down

Pole Vaulter,

I don't have a problem with your post and indeed your advice is sound advice - check out all the schools you can and make an informed decision. Nor am I implying that Johnston's is a bad school.

What I do have a problem with is schools/operators, like the one mentioned, charging unrealistic prices (i.e not enough) for their services and undercutting everyone else in an industry where we have enough operators taking the all out "slash and burn" approach to pricing.

As Gaunty put it so well in another post:

...they haven't been charging enough or keeping their charges in line with replacement cost for the last 20 or more years. Or if they tried there was always some ******** going to knock them off, with an even older crock of **** ...
...Simply the industry has spent the last 30 odd years convincing the market that it can get cheaper every year, year on year.
.

I fail to see how they can make a profit out of the rates they are charging. And I don't want to here this "utilisation" crap. As most operators out there with Barons will tell you, you just can't run one profitably for that sort of money.

I'm not getting involved in the rest of the arguement other than to say I flew there, recommend them and considering that probably 95% of their flying is ME CIR related they don't appear to be running a charity. How have they continued to operate and grow if they aren't making a profit, why are they still around after years in the business if what they are charging is unrealistic? Must be making money somehow!

Puff,

I'm with you mate, did my ME-CIR early this year with Johnston and glad I did. Jamie is not only a top bloke but runs a very professional outfit, and offers great tutoring even out of hours for any problems. I did a lot of shopping around to find the best offer, and i'm pretty sure i found it. As for SSCBD, mate, i'm not real sure how you can make a judgement about an organisation you know nothing about, if JAS is so unprofitable, how come they're just about to put on another Baron?
