as of june united will use 777's on the daily. .auckland-los angeles flights instead of 744's,. .they will also discontinue the auckland-melbourne service.
744 can sometimes be limited on lax/akl, not sure yet about 777 operational problems lax/akl.
Incidentally, If your in WLG on or about the 23 Feb, Keep an eye out for the 777 paying a visit. <img src="wink.gif" border="0">

YANKEE 4 - "It is of interest because..." - there are TWO countries in this forum, and it is is of specific interest to one of them, on two counts, 1.considering there had been rumours that UA was pulling off the route altogether, and 2. ANZ will get the on flying traffic to MEL, but for how long?? - there is another rumour that the next B777 variant will be LAX-MEL capable - from the general point of view, the news is interesting and of interest to aviators at large because I suspect it IS the longest ETOPs sector - anyone know if it will be under 180 or 207 minutes?
Not sure how LAX-MEL compares but I think the longest 777 route currently is HKG-New York by Continental, thts 7337 NM block time of 15hr 55Min

It would come close to that puff, from memory the UA841/UA842 AKL/LAX sector was about 16.5hrs or so in a B744. Also done it (not personally flying) in about 17 odd on three engines. However doesn't the B773 cruise faster than the B744?? A bloody long way in a twin any way you look at it!! Raises another question, which would you rather an engine failure on a B744 or a B773?? Given thrust avail and system redundancies avail, not engines remaining!
