Tesna looks at second-hand planes
Fri "The Australian"
. .Tesna looks at second-hand planes. .By Steve Creedy, Aviation writer . .February 01, 2002
THE Fox-Lew Tesna syndicate is considering expanding its Ansett fleet with used aircraft rather than the new planes it had planned to lease from United Airlines.
. .Industry sources believe the United planes are no longer coming and that Tesna is trying to obtain older aircraft from US investor Bill Franke's former airline America West and failed Belgian carrier Sabena.
Tesna confirmed yesterday it had looked at other aircraft but denied this meant the negotiations with United had failed.
The news came as the Government's guarantee for Ansett tickets ended last night. From today, Ansett passengers are not guaranteed any refund if the airline fails to operate flights.
Ansett also faces paying refunds on business-class tickets already sold, because the new full-service airline has failed to meet its launch date, set for today.
Aircraft leasing was one of several third-party issues that delayed the relaunch and prompted warnings from the administrators that the Tesna deal might fall through.
Others included the transfer to Tesna of airport terminal leases, which produced a tense exchange with the Sydney Airports Corporation, and moves by information technology providers to charge hefty sign-up fees on new contracts issued to Tesna.
The Brisbane Airport Corporation also revealed yesterday it is yet to sign a deal with Tesna.
And Tesna still has to sign a deal with lessors of 16 existing Ansett A320s and additional aircraft it will use to expand its fleet to 29 planes.
The syndicate confirmed yesterday it was looking beyond United for aircraft but said this was simply testing the market to ensure it was getting the best deal.
"All we've done is explore the international market to test the commercial parameters," a spokesman said. "The idea that we've gone somewhere else and the United thing is gone isn't true."
The spokesman would not comment on a leaked document that purported to outline the Fox-Lew Ansett frequent flyer program.
It is understood the draft document outlines one of several proposals under consideration and may not reflect the final program when it is launched next week.
Under the draft, Ansett frequent flyers would lose 67 billion old points but retain their status and receive bonus points for travelling.
Meanwhile, a Sydney Airport Corporation spokesman said no substantive progress had been made in resolving the standoff over the transfer to Tesna of the Ansett domestic terminal leases.

Makes sense if they are talking about A32Xs out of Swissair/Sabena. Some of them were delivered in the second half of last year and would be a great opportunity. Not so sure about America West. I assume whatever was arranged with them would be similar to the proposed UA arrangement as they are also looking at A32X delivery deferrals.
Then again, it could all be a ruse by Fox/Lew to force UA/Airbus and/or the current AN A320 lessors into a bit more pencil sharpening.

Lot of uncertainty about UA just now... maybe Tesna were leery about taking leases on planes whose owners might end up down the AN road, god forbid.
If Virgin Express take over Sabena, they will probably want to standardise on 3xx or 737 [VEX current type]. If the latter, there are 319s looking for homes. Certainly Aer Lingus, an operator with 737 and 320/1 should be looking at them to reduce types, and why shouldn't Tesna?

Mmmm, I thought that the whole point of getting these brand new A320s was to minimise their maintenance liabilities and downtime during the startup. After all they don’t have any engineering support…
Also the UA aircraft were already specified in STAR Alliance configuration – they just needed a coat of paint. How are these Sabena aircraft configured?
They are certainly leaving it late to decide.

Something doesn't seem right does it!
Here we were, ready to watch the launch on Feb 1, and now we are told that there is a hiccup with the jets!
Hope that the "new" Tesna jets still have the promised internet, phones and seat back video as promised.

In think a lot of people reading these forums have already realised the fact that we have a bunch of TRUCKIES bying an airline.. .I hope when reality sets in for the two of them the fact that running a MAC truck is not the same as running a A-320.. .If they continue down there current parth they are pushing there cost cutting to a point of being a danger to the travelling public.. .In the current situation I am glad I am not involved

I agree with case drain. Only thing is they havent bought anything yet. If this deal falls A over T theres gonna be some red faces in the administrators offices that day!
If thay were even thinking of starting on the 1st at least the aircraft should be around. I smell a big dead fish!

That particular fish has been dead since the result of the last election was proclaimed, not surprising it smells so bad.

The whole deal is starting to get a distinct odour.
Also the Sabena A319 are already being sold. A friend has told me today that his Company has acquired 2 of them for delivery this month.
Ansett Mk## is becoming more and more like "Chansett" with all the problems that seem to be emerging. And considering they seem to be still throwing money at the wall with great abandon I still have my doubts that they will survive that long if they actually get started. However if they fail, it appears that the new owners will do very well out of it if half of what I have read is true. Just find out who or what entity will own the various bits of infrastructure, ie terminal leases, computers etc.
Have a nice day

Hey, I've got a great idea..............why don't Tesna talk to the owners of all those 737's and 767's lying around Oz already painted in AN colours. Presumably already configured for AN ops....plenty of trained (and hungry) crews around........manuals in place....known engineering history............... .Anybody?. .Can't believe that Tesna and the ship of fools have been rushing around for the last three months "organising" their proposed operation whilst overlooking one tiny detail.........the aeroplanes!

I could be wrong (I seem to remember once a long time ago) but if Tesna obtain 2nd hand aircraft wont they need to be C of A'd here in Oz? I know for a GA aircraft this can take some weeks. Maybe its different for this category of aircraft.
Anybody enlighten me further on this?
