United A320s
I've just arrived for night shift, to be told that Tesna is no longer to be leasing/buying United's A320 aircraft. It appears we are to be continuing with our old aircraft until further notice. Don't know why, but this is a rumour network, any ideas, anyone?

Read something on one of the other forums about the possibility of United going into Chapter 11 bankruptcy.....if that would have anything to do with it. To be honest I wouldn't have a clue if that would mean anything about Tesna buying there A320s but it's something to think about I guess.

There are a lot of 320s parked the moment, American West, Canada 3000, Fly FTI, Monarch, Sabena, Swissair, Virgin Alantic and Lufthansa have A320 series aircraft parked/stored at the moment.
On top of this their is about another 40 aircraft on the market at the moment up for lease.
If United are in trouble, thats another 142 airframes, good time to start an airline with A320s I guess.

Unless I've got this backwards they have to provide some considerable operational, maintenance and training evidence before they get ETOPS approval, just buying an ETOPS capable aircraft doesn't cut it.
I would like to see how they CASA/AN Mk11 justify a simple transfer of an ETOPS approval given that the only actual similarity between the former and proposed airline organisation in so far as AOC and ETOPS is the name.????

It might have something to do with the fact they have no ADF's or HF fitted. Also the slides are not rafts so they would have to change these as well.. .Also herd that the AN order of 320/321 a/c will be here earlyer.

Too true Gaunty, but having the ETOPS aircraft goes a looong way to getting the approval.
Zoolander, methinks perhaps you are right, but I'd thought I'd pass on what that little birdie on my shoulder told me...right before he crapp ed on me!!!

I may stand to be corrected, but are you saying they paid to have non standard, ddrmi, rmp, mcdu, and wiring looms in these aircraft ?
Surly that would cost more that that it would save.
UAL aircraft look like they have the adf antenna installed forward of the vhf 3 antenna, could be my imagination.
I thought the hf aerial in the tail was also std equipment.
What exactly do you mean by "taken out" or "not fitted"

Zeke, with regard the A319: DDRMI, MCDU & RMP all AI standard. Only one ADF Rx fitted; either DDRMI needle, when selected to ADF, will display the one (tuned)ADF. MCDU RadNav page has only one ADF field. RMP has HF tx/rx buttons as usual but are non-op as HF Tx/Rx not fitted.

Soup Dragon,
Thanks, seems like they just opted out and did not get the receiver box installed in the avionics bay.
Sliding those boxes in and getting them operational is something that could be done as line maintenance, its not like they have to rewire the aircraft for aerials, cockpit displays or provide the additional power circuits.

I hear that the old AN 767's are being prepared for action for tesna to use....as I type.....next they will be using 737's 146's & F28's.
Nothing would surprise me anymore.. I think anything is possible !!

Buster: How many of the intended Tesna routes will be ETOPS operations, and which are they?
Soup Dragon: Does the A319 have the usual two FMGCs fitted? I supposed they had, for redundancy safety if nothing else. I can't see that removing an ADF Tx/Rx and an HF Tx/Rx would have a great weight saving in the long run.
Reportfurther: The B767s didn't cause AN the trouble, CASA managed that all by themselves.
I'm still puzzled!!
