Report: Australian Govt. Likely to Retain Power

Reuters

SYDNEY (Nov. 10) - Early counting in Australia's general election suggested Prime Minister John Howard's conservative government would win a third consecutive term, Australian Broadcasting Corp television said on Saturday.

With about 30 percent of the vote counted, ABC electoral analyst Antony Green said it was likely Howard's Liberal/National coalition would hold on to power by about the same margin of seven seats it won in 1998.

"It looks like the government is back in with the same or a slightly smaller majority," Green said.

"I think that's a relatively firm prediction you can make."

Vote counting was underway in the populous eastern states of New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland but was yet to begin in Western Australia state.

Kim Beazley's center-left Labor opposition needed a national swing of only 0.8 percent to win power. Counting suggested a swing of about two percent against Labor.

Opinion polls earlier on Saturday suggested Howard had fought a successful campaign based on stopping illegal boat people from entering Australia. The move bolstered his flagging support, as did his staunch support for U.S.-led strikes against Afghanistan.

Labor backed Howard's boat people stand but also tried to focus attention on domestic issues like health, education and jobs.

Looks like LIB and NATs to win with 2% swing towards them.

LAB 2% swing against.

DEM stable

Maybe some increse in IND seats.

Really looks like the status quo will remain with very little change. Except it looks like Kernot is gone.

Anderson back with an increased % vote. Lets hope the DS rumour is not true.

Good riddance - she really showed her true colours at the last election when it appeared she was going to lose her seat. How unfortunate for her she ended up winning albeit with a considerable amount of egg on her face. Australia really does not need politicians of her integrity, or lack thereof.

Cheryl's defection to Labour did not do much for the party's cry of "keep the bastards honest" - she is one of the bastards.

A tip this time around Cheryl - try being gracious in defeat.

*Howard wins historic third term*

Prime Minister John Howard has claimed victory in the federal election
winning an historic third term.

Addressing a jubilant crowd of supporters at the Wentworth Hotel in
Sydney, Mr Howard thanked the Australian public and paid tribute to
Labor leader Kim Beazley.

"I cannot express to you the honour and privilege of being elected Prime
Minister of the greatest country in the world," he said.

"My resolve, my commitment, my dedication is to the service of the Aust
people in the years ahead."

Mr Howard said the nation faces challenges ahead as a result of the
September 11 terrorist attacks in the US.

"We come together, we bind together in unity, not only one with the
other, but also with like minded people around the world. Those
terrivble deeds were done to us as much as they were done to our
American friends," he said.

"We have a duty to respond to them."

Mr Howard thanked Mr Beazley for his concession speech and paid respect
to him as an honourable political opponent.

"I would like to thank Kim Beazley the leader of the ALP for his
gracious words...I pay respect to him as an honourable political
opponent.

"I wish him, his wife Susie and his family well."

"Can I say to all the members and supporters of the Liberal Party of
Australia what a wonderful result tonight is," he said.

"Not only have we won for the third time, but this is the greatest
two-party preferred swing to an incumbent government since 1966."

He said the Aston by-election was a "great turning point" in the
Coalition's fightback from the political depths it plumbed earlier in
the year.

He paid tribute to the way in which "our party and our National Party
colleagues in Coalition" responded to the concerns of the Australian
people.

"I would also like to thank my colleague and friend, the deputy leader
of the Liberal Party, Peter Costello."

"But I do want to pay particular tribute to three people tonight. I
think what Ross Cameron and Pat Farmer have achieved tonight and can I
also express my unbounded admiration for Ron Boswell of the National
Party: Ron, I do think you're pretty effective.

The Prime Minister also paid tribute to his campaign director Lynton
Crosby.

"Lynton, to you and your team I record my immense gratitude.

"We have ahead of us some difficult and challenging years but I know
that the spirit of the Australian people will be equal to the task and
the challenge. There is something special about being an Australian," he
said.

"That Australian spirit, that capacity, that mateship that allows us to
pull together in times of challenge and times of adversity is something
special."

"We all have a duty, each to the other, to come together as part of the
great Australian nation...I have no doubt that the spirit of the
Australian people will enable us to respond to all of those challenges,"
he said.

"I want to dedicate myself, and all the members of my parliamentary
team, to the service, from tomorrow morning onwards, to the service of
the Australian people."

*Beazley concedes defeat, quits leadership*

Opposition leader Kim Beazley has conceded defeat in the federal
election and announced his resignation as leader of the ALP.

Mr Beazley congratulated John Howard on his victory and said he was
proud of the Labor Party saying the party has fought a magnificent
campaign under adverse circumstances.

"We have fought a magnificent campaign in adverse circumstances and we
have held onto a postition I could not conceive of five weeks ago," he
said.

"Five weeks ago it looked as if we were heading for an anihilation.

"It is an extraordinarily difficult thing to conduct an election
campaign against the backdrop of a war.

"Governments all round the globe have been the beneficiaries of enormous
support because of the war.

"I am so proud of the way we've fought. We've stood four square for the
security of Australian people," he said.

Mr Beazley says domestic issues will not go away.

"Problems in public schools and the crisis in aged care will be there
tomorrow," he said.

"We've looked down through the fog of war to the kitchen table of the
average Australian family."

"There will be a broader challenge to government too: how are we going
to be able to draw on all our people...on the strength of all our
diversity to ensure that we as a nation endure and prosper.

"We don't stand as we did once in the high regard of the nations around
us."

Mr Beazley announced his resignation as leader and said he would be
moving to the back bench.

"It's not my intention to remain as leader of the Australian Labor
Party," he said.

"I bow out of Labor Party history now in gratitude to all of you,
ordinary members of the Australia Labor Party who've stood four square
with us over the years."

Mr Beazley said that while 99 per cent of him regretted the defeat, 1
per cent was glad that his decision to stand down as Opposition leader
means he will "be able to return to such a magnificent and supportive
family".

"We will put forward an alternative government that will win," he said.

*Kernot bows out of Dickson and politics*

Cheryl Kernot has conceded defeat in the north Brisbane seat of Dickson.

The Liberals' Peter Dutton won the seat with a swing of around 7 per
cent.

Arriving with her daughter, Ms Kernot was greeted by cheers from her
supporters.

She says tonight is probably the end of her career in politics.

Ms Kernot says there are a lot of reasons for her defeat and they are
not all called Cheryl.

Peter Dutton says he ran a positive campaign, and did not stoop to
Labors mud slinging.

------------

*Hanson's bid for Senate seat appears doomed*

One Nation founder Pauline Hanson's bid for a Queensland Senate seat
appears doomed.

Miss Hanson has spent the evening at the luxury Gold Coast hinterland
home of Trevor Hanson who was second on One Nation's Senate ticket and
no relation.

The media has been camped outside the complex in the rain, waiting for
Miss Hanson to emerge.

One Nation has failed to win a Lower House seat with strong swings
recorded against the party nationally and Queensland.

Senior Queensland ALP and National Party figures say Miss Hanson cannot
win her bid for a Queensland Senate seat and One Nation's own state
director Maurie Marsden concedes it would be very difficult for her to
win from here.

Thumbs up

Sanity prevailed!!!!!!

Now, I hope the government makes the right "long term" decisions about aviation in Australia. It was clearly obvious that statements by politicians from both sides prior to the election were simply attempts at buying votes. Now, we need the right long term answers.

Good luck to all AN staff - not just the lucky 4000 that get jobs with the new owners.
