Exclamation VH-UJM Aero Commander - Double engine-failure Adelaide.

VH-UJM an Aero Commander landed safely this evening in a field about 30nm North of Adelaide after both engines ceased to operate.. .. .All safe. No screaming fireball for the fifth estate. Sounds like a job well done...except, why did they stop again?

As you do.. .. .Goodness Bob Hoover can do a full loop, roll off the top and land with both shut down.. .. .Good work to whoever it was, now for the paperwork.

Hoover's a legend alright .. doesn't he do one of these tricks with a cup of coffee on the dash - AND he doesn't spill a drop!

Voice,. .. .The video I saw was of him pouring a jug of water into a cup sitting on the center of the coaming. He had to hold the jug 'back handed' to keep his arm clear of the camera's view.. .. .All done while performing a barrel roll!

Dont forget the ball on the end of a foot of string. It may as well be a rod because it does not move a millimetre. Absolute perfect balance.

Not taking it away from the man for a minute, but if a manufacturer gave you an aircraft and a budget that said go away and take whatever time it takes to perfect a routine, you too could do the same.. .1G manouvres and energy management routines are simple and can be performed in any aircraft given the practise and skills development. The Aero Commander is not built any more or less "strong" than the others of its ilk just the first to have someone dedicated to the formation of the routine.. .. .Impressive nonetheless.

'Not taking it away from the man for a minute', and you then proceed to do exactly that.. .. .Why can't you just give credit where credit is due?

Oh dear.. .. .The level of skill required for Hoovers routine is available or should be that expected or certainly aspired to by/for every pilot given the opportunity to practise the same.. .. .There is no mystery or superman requirement.. .. .It was a great gee whiz sales stunt for Aero Commander and certainly sold a few aircraft at the same time as showing the masses that the loss of both engines was not nor should be certain death and that accurate 1G flying is not limited to straight and level.. .. .The Boeing 720 was rolled the same way before a crowd of buyers with the same result and I'll bet it wasn't the last one either.. .. .It's called the confidence one gets from training and experience that turns the boy into the man.. .. .Don't try this at home kids but go get in a Aerobat or aerobatic glider with an instructor and find out for yourself.

Gaunty puts the manouvers performed by Bob Hoover into their true perspective, they are not "black magic" and can be learned by any pilot with the opportunity to practice same. It is nothing more than proper flight control imput and energy management.. .. .On the other hand old Bob sure has learned to do it well.. .. .The Aero Commander at one point in its lifetime did have a spar failure problem that had to be addressed to rectify the problem I believe.. .. ................. . The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no.

Gaunty. .I realy think the word every pilot is a bit ,,, strong. The way you see it , and given the same exposure you could take the world unlimited aerobatic title ! Big Call .why not go a little further , do some training ,take on the world boxing title, in your division of course.. .To sum it all up .... No not every pilot and that means you to Chum !

Hmmmmm, yes the empty engine nacelle was very popular as a baggage locker as the aircraft did not have all that much room in the cabin left as the propellor took up a fair bit of it especially when they went to the three bladed version.

My my, there are some fragile egos around here today.. .. .It seems the feeling around here with some is that we should all practise extreme forms of mediocrity.. .. .Oh well if the cap fits.

gaunty . .One has to be careful not to inflame the yoof wot reads this board.. .I can imagine Aero Commanders with both engines feathered and the gear down going in all over the place like lawn darts.

I wish I could say with enough practice I could do the routine as consistantly perfect as Bob Hoover, but realistically the answer is no. Hoover's skill is the one in a million kind.

Yo, Buck, I think the main thrust there was that given an unlimited amount of time/money to spend flying the aircraft, and appropriate instruction, just about any normal pilot could do a "Bob" - not an unreasonable proposition. The esteemed Mr Hoover still puts his pants on one leg at a time, and Tom Mooney wasn't born into an Edge (or whatever it is that he does his aerobatic stuff in).. .. .I'd like the opportunity to test my theory: anyone want to give me unlimited time in a AC500S to see what can be done?
