PNG : Photos by Chimbu Chuckles
Just while I'm waiting to hear back from Alastair, I've received some photos from Chimbu Chuckles. He has promised to get some more scanned, for inclusion, so those who are interested should bookmark the URL for his photos and check back regularly.
Sadly, he lost a lot of history in the twin volcanic eruptions at Rabaul in 1994. The few in this collection, so far, provide a fascinating insight into his time in PNG and it is my privilege to be able to host it for him.
So, click on this link and enjoy the views!

Very Clever Oz, might I suggest people with photos from 'The Top End' also send piccies to OZ. Paradise doesn't have to end just north of Saibai island!
We could end up with quite a 'resource' for you people thinking of entering this profession.
I'll see if I can't find a few more to send!
Chuckles.

Chuck: "Paradise doesn't have to end just north of Saibai island!" The words "Paradise" and "Saibai" in the same sentence? Not been to Saibai for some time, eh Chuck?
Chuck, the picture of the two C185's - is that York Mendoza's hangar in the back ground?
Sprocket: Dennis and his pogo stick (aka the Chimbu Warrior) was invented by Peanut Butter about 1975 (pre Self Government) when the name was changed from Territory Airlines to Talair for political correctness.
VH-GKR, the first DHC6-200 (later P2-RDB) acquired from Golden West in the USA and ferried by Brian McCook (1973?), was the only Otter ever painted in the old Squashed Cockroach colour scheme. Don "Biggles" Sinclair was Chief Pilot at the time of the introduction of the Twin Otters.
The original TAL colour scheme applied to the DH84 Dragons and Cessna 170's was silver with blue engine cowlings. The Squashed Cockcroach colour scheme appeared about 1961, about the time of the purchase of the first B55 Baron, (which lost a main wheel at Minj in 1962), this aircraft being sold to a timber company in Rabaul in the 1970's.
The last DH84 Dragon was VH-AON, ferried to Australia in 1958 by Dick Cresswell, is now at the Wangaratta Air Museum.
Does anyone have a picture of the Cessna 550 Citation P2-RDY (Ser No 550-0013) painted in the new Talair colour scheme? (This aircraft was later destroyed in an accident in South America.)

I realise it was somewhat of an OXYMORONIC sentence Torres. Why don't you scan some photos and send them to Oz, you'd have some great ones.
Yes that's Yorke's old hangar, where the new International terminal is now.
John Mowatt just emailed me a great one of myself and daughter taken at the dero about 1993, though I don't think I'll submit that one for the site.John was the poor individual who recieved the 'second worse' injuries at the Dero massacre, Ist place went to the gate gaurd. He has a few of Kagi, Efogi and the old Dero he may post on the site.

I don't wanna sound like a party pooper, but I fear being inundated with pics to go online. It's true that it doesn't take long to do, but I have to pay for space on the site I use. I was happy to make it available to Alastair and Chuck, but if I get heaps more, I'll run out of space for my own pics.
I have another problem too, in that the computer I use in CNS is not the one I use in PNG. And neither of them have direct cross-references to any of the stuff I've put online using each of the computers. Thus, if more folks send me pics, while I'm in Port Morbid, they may have to wait until my next escape to Cairns.
As it is, I've just grabbed all my old albums out of storage and won't be able to scan them until I'm back in PNG. All up, I'm expecting to put about 100 photos up, to show a bit more of PNG to those who may be interested. There's quite a few that show places the way they used to be, so they have a bit of "historical" significance too.
But I'm yet to figure how to put them online in the same basic collection as all the rest, without a cross-reference to those already up and those, from Alastair, that are yet to eventuate.
One issue, that Alastair has raised, may be of interest to others using the same site to post their pics. The fact is that nobody can guarantee that the photos won't be downloaded by folks who plan to derive a commercial benefit from them. If you don't want that to happen to your photos, don't put them online.
Or, at least, don't make them publicly accessible. This option is probably a bit pointless though.
I'm waiting with baited breath for more pics, Chuck. For everyone's info, he sent me a pic of the Falcon he flies and it's now on the same site as linked in my original post.

Hmmm hadn't thought about some of the issues you raise, good ones too.
I should have some more good ones scanned in the next few days.
Some of the volcanis eruptions aren't great quality, but you try and take a really good piccy while flying at 300' under volcanic ash next to a volcano in 'twilight' lighting
Chuck.

Chuck, I passed all my photographs and historic research to the author of the Balus series in 1982. Unfortunately, they were returned to Flight West and seem to have since "gone missing", although some are in the Balus trilogy of books (usually credited to "Talair").
Interesting picture of myself on page 168 of Balus III (wish I was that weight again.....) and even junior says nice things about me on page 336 onwards. Never thought he cared.....
Jim Sinclair's Wings of Gold and the Balus trilogy should be essential reading for anyone anticipating a career in PNG aviation. They are a truly fascinating insight into the history and development of aviation and aviation companies in Papua New Guinea.

Fully agree Torres. I had a butchers at P168 in Balus 3... hmmmmmm.
I used to carry my copy in the car when I went to the dero club and every time I saw somebody who had their picture in the book, or who had a mentions, I used to get their signature against the entry.
Result is a unique volume which I treasure.
I have even got the famous Chimbu Chuckles, and Sir Shags underneath that wonderful picture opposite Page 1. Ozexpat has signed against his entry on Page 287 and most of the Air Niugini guys
on P313, and so on and so on.
I was really glad I made the effort, and thank you, Torres for making me get the book out and leafing through it. I had a very nostalgic half hour flicking through it.
By the way Ozex...I have a picture of my back the day after the Dero Club massacre....lovely wound.!! I was in Hospital recently for a minor check, and the Doc asked me what the scar was.
I told him that it was my Port Moresby love bite.!!!!

I've done my sums and believe that I can accommodate up to 200 photos, so long as they aren't excessively large files. This is in addition to the space I've made available to Alastair and an assumption of up to 50 photos from Chuck - but don't panic if ya don't have that many, mate! But I just gotta have them eruption pics mate - probably the only ones not in captivity! I'll even try to enhance them a bit, in an effort to improve the quality a bit.
TD, me ol china! I'd forgotten about signing your copy of the book. I wonder if it can be used as evidence against me...? And I absolutely MUST HAVE the photo of yer "love bite"! Not only does it serve to show the sort of sh!t that can happen in PNG, but a truly great testimonial to your own courage and resilience!
So, Torres, if you have photos that you want to share with others, I'll happily put them up online.
But, please, everyone - don't e-mail more than 6 photos at a time. It chokes up an already chokka in-box. Ta.
[Editted to add a reminder to please use the address [email protected] , at least for the next two weeks.]

Chuck sent me a few more photos a few days ago. I added them to his "gallery" but neglected to mention it here, so you can all take another look. I'm expecting a few more from CC in due course and will try to get them into the gallery as soon as possible - and lte you all know!
Well, that's the plan, anyway...

TD. I carried out seven years of historical research on Talair and the companies we acquired, which I gave to Jim Sinclair, along with about 400 pictures, at the 30th Birthday Party in 1982. That research was to be the basis of one volume to be called "Balus". We then got many others involved and the book grew far too large, hence three volumes.
My copies of Balus, as well as Wings of Gold, are also all signed on the relevent pages. Junior had about 50 or 60 copies of the Balus series - no idea where they went.
I also have a mountain of early Paradise in flight magazines and the bound copies of Paradise Plus.

I checked my collection and found a bunch of in flight mags from Air Niugini plus a full set of books commissioned by PX from a couple of germans and which feature various parts of PNG.
Ahhhhhhhhh.....the nostalgia.
Chuckles ....did anybody tell you that someone has stolen the props from your Falcon.??
Ba#$%&$s would steal anything.

I'm not still up there...I escaped 2.5 years ago A gnat's whisker short of 13 years was enough for dispela lik lik.
I seem to remember getting very very drunk at your go pinis party, having 'borrowed' a bandit with the rest of the Lae crowd to get there.
I also got very very drunk with Cameron L a few nights ago! Congrats on the 767 command by the way. He has my phone number in Singapore or email me and I'll probably get very very drunk with you again when next you RON
$hit there seems to be a common thread running though this post
I just got in from a quick Seletar-Dhaka-Kathmandu-Dhaka-Seletar and I'm shagged so off to the sack for moi!
