SAFETY PINS INSERTED
Sun-Herald March 29,2002. . Fatal ejection . .. .KUALA LUMPER- A Malaysian air force technician was killed when the ejection seat of a fighter jet went off by mistake inside a hangar, rocketing him into the ceiling.. .. .Shaun Christopher Chew was demonstrating the ejection seat in a British-made Hawk 108 fighter to engineers at the Royal Malaysian Air Force base in Butterworth, about 280km north of Kuala Lumpur.. .. .During the demonstration, the rocket designed to propel the seat and pilot clear of the plane during an in-flight emergency fired, sending Chew crashing into the roof of the hangar before he fell to the ground.. .. .Regards. .. .I edited original post to quote the article.Sorry about that BTT & 772. . . . [ 21 March 2002, 07:33: Message edited by: OZBUSDRIVER ]

Ouch!!. .. .Is he alive?. .. .I met (true story) the first person EVER to be accidently ejected from an ejector seat (he was an engineer-happened a long time ago in the UK. He lives on the South coast of NSW), it too occured in a hangar and he said that the only thing that kept him from dying, was the fact that the ejector seats then, were not as powerful as todays.. .. .Going by his words I doubt this guy is going too well: unless he was extremely lucky somehow.. . . . [ 21 March 2002, 07:02: Message edited by: BelowTenThousand ]

Ummmm, . .
quote:
A Malaysian air force technician was killed

I think that means he probably isn't alive - although with Easter coming up BelowTenThousand might not be letting on to all of us the TRUE identity of Mr Chew!. .. .BTW, OZB it's Kuala Lumpur. Thanks for the report.

Thanks Kap, as always my two finga technique let me down. Please do not berate BTT, my fault there. I went back and changed my post quoting the full article. The first attempt I only had the accident with no mention of the fatality. Therefore BTT and 772's post didnt sound right with my edited post.. .. .Regards

Fatal? . .. .Very understandable in these days of zero/zero seats (don't know if the Hawk has a zero/zero but even a zero/90 will kill ya).. .. .Years ago the practice use to be:. .1. Aircraft towed to hangar.. .2. Gunnies disarm seat ( as in remove the bit that goes BANG).. .3. Aircraft THEN enters hangar for maintenance.. .. .RMAF may not have been using this practice - might be from now on though.

The Hawks in Butterworth have car-ports they stay in when on line. It might have been one of those the fella went into - not the sort of thing you would want to be pulling cartridges/rocket packs out of every time you pull into one.

FishHead . .. .No argument. But a car port is usually a parking or readiness stand, it is not a place where deep maintenance or maintenance being performed over several days is carried out. For this a hangar is used and my statement still holds.

If it wasn't so serious you'd laugh your t*ts off. So many errors right from the pilot down to the ground crew. All it took was fitting the pins. I suppose the likes of AAMRAM could fill us in here, but from what I understand you cannot egress from an armed seat or its not wise to anyway.

The only way I know to egress from a 'hot' seat is to let the thing fall away from you on the way down. However, you could argue that it is no longer 'hot'. Any other way can be very detrimental to long-term (or short-term) career prospects.
