Ansett Pilots Association - what's happened to it?
Had a look at the APA website and noticed a distinct LACK of office bearers. See below:. .. .President:Henry Otto . .Secretary: . .Vice President: . .Vice President:. .Treasurer: Robert McKay . .IR Manager:Gordon Smith . .Office Manager: Maureen Milloy . .. .What will/has happened to the assets?. .. .Unlike the AFAP (Federation) that previously represented the Ansett pilots and G.A pilots, the APA now has no employed pilots to represent, and so I guess is a non-entity.. .Or has it already been wound up?

But one imagines that the level and quality of the APA contribution to a safe, equitable world for pilots will remain unchanged despite their demise?. .. .Perhaps they should donate the assets to the AFAP who have been doing the job of several unions over recent years.

What about Dick(IE) Marman, the founding father of the APA? Rueing his words before the High Court in 1991 perhaps?. .. .My guess is that you-know-what always floats to the surface - we'll see them all again in some other guise as 'born again' "89-ers". (And we'll all have "misunderstood" their actions completely - or so they'll tell anyone who'll listen.)

I would imagine that the dues paid to APA would have amounted to several hundred dollars per pilot, per year, and that unless a fund to assist ex-AN pilots (similar to the one set up by the AFAP, where employed pilots made contributions to help out those in need) has been established, many would jump at the chance of getting an extra couple of hundred $$'s right now.. .. .Considering President captain Henig Otto's boast to a Melbourne radio station recently that he had "invested wisely over the years", he and others more fortunate - eg. the employed ones - might like to consider putting some money into an APA fund, or alternatively wind APA up and pay out their members.. .. .The pilots of the AFAP did it for their members under similar circumstances - now it's the turn of the generation that followed.. .Sui Generis.

Kaptin M. .Total assistance from APA during stand down period: NIL. .Assistance from APA since final collapse: NIL. .Input from APA president to others than himself: NIL. .Could have done the members resumes employing a secretarial service or any bloody thing to help but as usual: NIL. .Most of the COM now SO's with "Q". .$ in kitty I would estimate to equate to over $1000 per member. Maybe more with all the resignations.. .Will we see it? I very much doubt it.

It has been alleged that there was over $1,800,000 in the kitty before the "Staff Buyout", does anyone know how much is left and where it went?. .. .I would like to see it wound up as soon as possible and the suckers payed out.. .. .p.s.. .. .They never did anything for me, I should have stayed in the AFAP but was so pissed off after the dispute that I resigned from the AFAP.. .. .(I did not scab, BTW). .. .

I think we can forgive – or at least certainly understand – that these are very stressful times for people like Daffy Duck 69. . .. .But Daffy, do yourself and your colleagues in a similar situation a huge favour and delete your last intemperate post now that you’ve had time to reconsider what you posted onto what is a public site. Otherwise people might begin to suspect that the things the ‘stay out 89ers’ keep saying about the ‘went backs’ might have some basis in fact. . .. .And for the chances the (ex)AN pilots will see their ‘union’ dues? About the same odds as if you were to add an “L” to their “leader’s”(!!!!) suuuurname. He was a sad b**** even before he became a hero.

Most junior pilots were APA members for some protection from management bullying or an incident.. .. .Junior pilots were well aware of infighting regarding start dates during the dispute to further advance individual careers.. .. .Silence was always the response to factors affecting junior pilots` careers.Look no further than the disasterous CRJ introduction.. .. .Junior pilots could never say much in the old AN.Behind our smiles there was a very good understanding of machinations and some consequential aversions.. .. .Oh and what did happen to the APA jobs committee?

I think that Capt_Zoolander has raised an important issue when he asks:. ."It has been alleged that there was over $1,800,000 in the kitty before the "Staff Buyout", does anyone know how much is left and where it went?". .. .Hopefully this isn't being paid to the remaining "Office bearers" and their assistants unless they are doing something positive towards placing the unemployed pilots. Or perhaps it's viewed as a "wise investment" by others.. .. .Keep an eye on the cash register, gentlemen - it was YOUR union, built with YOUR money!

APA website advises 2 hour free sim (no motion) for AN pilots. Conditions apply. Funny how all of a sudden the sim's available for free? . .I suspect the real reason is that some very senior ex management pilots are going to SQ for interviews and assessment and don't want to pay like everyone else. The sim centre is run by an ex management pilot. How convenient.

Once knowing (a long time ago) the charming err… “personality” of the last President of APA relatively well, I imagine that junior pilots in the post-89 AN would have done well to have adhered to that tried and true rule of voting for any office holder in a pilots’ union – . .. .”Always vote for someone with a seniority number less than your own.”. .. .If that requires an explanation, the theory was that if your union rep was junior to you, he’d never vote for anything that threatened his number – and therefore, being senior to him, you should be safe. Recalling the charitable, self-effacing, altruistic, give-you-the-shirt-off-his-back character of Herr Tattsl…, before he became an (the?) Uberhero, and having seen him performing on television over the last six months, I would have thought that was particularly good advice. . .. .And if I was a junior (ex)AN pilot today, I’d be getting together with a bunch of similarly affected people and employing a high powered accountant and a lawyer to take a very close look at what’s being done with any excess ‘union’ funds.
