Post Ansett 45 Days Liquidity - Remember my posting?

Remember on the 4 July I posted a thread about Ansett having 45 liquidity remaining and much like some regular contributors to this fine website got hounded down.
Now I know how Slasher and Kaptin M feel!

So guys - I'm not saying I told you so but I was out by about a week despite some guys with outstanding business acumen insisting that 45 days liquidity was a huge amount in terms of cash liquidity!

Im in no way making fun of anybody who has suffered as a consequence of this catastrophy but if anything this highlights the extremely fine margins involved in operating airlines.

My contact that gave me the information about Ansett's perilous state also advised me recently that if things dont improve incredibly over the next 30 days that Virgin Atlantic may well be the next to fall.

Although a separate company Virgin Blue is still apparently running at a loss (how I dont know despite running around almost full) according to this same finance contact and would be in an extremely tenuous position if it's parent company were to suffer.

Looks like the Australian Airlines are not out of the mess quite yet.

Well aren't you a smarty then with good contacts.

The fact that Virgin Blue haven't been able to get any aircraft to increase services must point to the fact that money must be tight. Even the new summer schedule still shows no increase in flights. I can't believe they are only running one aircraft between Sydney and Melbourne but Ansett II are on that route with 4.

Ansett II should do ok, as long as they stay out of Virgins way. Services to Perth are a good idea. How about an Ansett II starting services to Cairns, at least Virgin haven't started there yet, or are they likely in the near future.

Cool

I dunno. Any company that embarks on an expansion program in a short period of time in a market as volitile as the Australian one would have to be asking for trouble. Is it possible that an airline such as VB is holding back a little to make sure that rapid expansion in the short term won't harm them in the long term? Me thinks VB will be here for the long term. Maybe treading carefully is not such a bad idea. I really don't think that they're short of dough. More like making sure they don't blow any.

Scooter - you may be right again.

"VB will next week announce the appointment of investment banks to search for a conerstone investor..." Fin Review Oct 6-7

The money is either for expansion or continuation.

It may well be the good Doctors week and he gets to pick up Ansett AND all of Virgin Atlantic.

Dont get too carried away gyes.
Virgin has not got the structure or the capibility to expsnd rapidily at this stage.
On the other hand Ansett still has all the systems in place at the moment to run a full servace airline let alone a discount one.
Lets all of us sit back and see what happens and not get too cookey.

Scooter - dont know where you get your info from but I was told today that Virgin Atlantic is in deep trouble - this is only a rumour site of course, but I think Richard might be regretting tearing up that Ansett cheque so quickly and with all that fanfare. But he was not to know was he.Hopefully most of the Ansett operation and infrastructure will be picked up for a song soon by the staff and a interested party.Methinks goodbye Virgin BLue you where an interesting little experiment.

Buster - technically you're correct but they actually closed up shop before the 45 days were up!
As a good mate of mine says "Well ****** me with a fish fork!"

With regard to VB a believe they will still be around and I'm glad to see they are not expanding out of sight as that would really make me worry.

I still believe that AN will be bought out in some shape or form, operate only about 50 odd jets and form an alliance with VB in much the same way as QF and Impulse.

The important aspect is still AN's international operations.
If liquidity is announced their slots will go into a pool and be up for grabs so I'm led to believe.

If it were me and I had the cash, had the debt ridden off for AN,utilise its resources effectively and replace its fleet (which Im sure leasing companies would much appreciate as their really doing it hard at the moment) then somebody will be in a very domineering position for the future.
