Announcement today that Kendell (SA) and ASA to merge
I got this off another thread/board and it confirms rumblings I've heard for a while:
Today an announcement is due announcing the merger of Airlines of SA and Kendell (I presume their SA ops only).
No info on the new name (probably just ASA) nor on any route info. It will mean a monopoly on certain routes (PLO in particular).
Will it be AN or QF affiliated?
There are more questions here than answers!

"Watch out for an announcement later today that Airlines of South Australia and
Kendell are to merge!"
and
"It [the airline's name] will be ASA.
Question of affiliation will be raised at press conference this afternoon."

Airlines of S A this afternoon announced that they had purchased Kendell's
South Australian operations.
Aircraft and staff are included and the operation will be fully affilliated
to QANTAS.
All operations from QANTAS terminal.
Kendell acft to be repainted in ASA colors (How long will that last?).

"Confusion Reigns - Claim and Counterclaim
Following ASA's announcement that they had purchased Kendell's SA operations,
a local Kendell rep denied it, while a rep from Arthur Andersen said that
there were five bids on the table and that a decision might not be made until
the New Year.
What's going on?"
Maybe things aren't as clear cut.
As I read it ASA seem to think they have bought Kendell. KD is not so sure and the administrators either. Anyone here from ASA/KD etc to confirm what is going on????

Airline buys Kendell's South Australian arm
Airlines of South Australia has bought the South Australian operations of Kendell Airlines for an undisclosed sum.
Kendell was a subsidiary of Ansett Airlines.
The deal involves Airlines of South Australia buying five Kendell planes.
Airlines of South Australia managing director Christine Kingham says up to 100 staff will be employed and priority will be given to re-hiring former Ansett and Kendell staff in South Australia.
Mrs Kingham is looking forward to Kendell's flight services resuming.
"I don't think we'd take it on in this day and age without that confidence," she said.
"It's been a particularly tough [time] for airlines worldwide. Just a few short years ago there were 10 airlines in South Australia; now there's three."

I would like to see a copy of an official press release issued by the Administrator of Kendell Airlines (Australia) Pty Ltd, Andersens, posted to this topic. It seems unusual not to have an announcement made by the Administrator at the same time as was the case with Ansett.

Come on guys!!!! I can tell you for a fact that Airlines of SA have NOT purchased the SA arm of KD. The press release/conference was aimed to pressue and "shame" the administrators into making a decision ASAP
(ie: give it to ASA). The SA division is the same as all the other networks - a number of bids have been submitted but the administrators are still "sifting" thru them.
ASA want the decision made in the very near future as their current situation is not looking good. They have 1 of their 3 bandits flying and 2 out of their 4 chieftains flying - if they had the finances wouldn't all there fleet be out earning revenue? They have made up considerable ground without KD to compete against however things were so bad beforehand it will still take them a while to move into the profit zone. I really cant see the SA government funding such an uncertain operation. ASA best asset is and always has been their staff. The Chief Pilot, tech crews & ops staff alike have brilliant workmanship & dedication and it is for them that I hope things turn out for the best. I can also tell you that QF are circling - there are not going to be any 1900's "given/sold" to ASA as previously posted and the only way you'll see a Dash8 in SA flying rpt is thru a QFlink/NJS operation. Brasilia's WERE definately on the agenda 24months ago( only for the PLO route)but the whyalla crash/fuel prices & bad management led to that being canned!!! Let's hope the administrators make the right choice on the sale and we see KD back flying again.

Adelaide "The Advertiser":
Airline buy-out hits turbulence
By Transport Writer BRADY HARAN
05dec01
THREE airline executives said yesterday they were the saviours of Kendell Airlines in SA – but it was a claim that was never cleared for take-off.
The Airlines of South Australia bosses called a meeting to declare they would be buying Kendell's SA operations, including five planes and a hangar at Adelaide Airport.
Within hours, Kendell's administrators denied the claim from Tony Kingham, Christine Kingham and Robert Graham, saying they were "baffled" by it.
"It simply isn't true that we have made any decision about the sale of Kendell," said Peter Wilms for accounting firm Andersen.
"All bids are still being considered.
"The business has not been sold to ASA at all and they are just one of five bidders for either all of, or parts of, the operation of Kendell."
Earlier, Airlines of SA managing director Ms Kingham proudly introduced the "first media conference in 19 1/2 years that we've been operating as a regional airline".
"It's a very exciting day for us and we consider it a major event in SA, we're announcing that we're purchasing Kendell's SA operations," she said.
Ms Kingham said she had spoken with Andersen yesterday morning and the accounting firm was not making the announcement because it was still negotiating the sale of Kendell's operations in the eastern states.
Airlines of SA, a 10-plane operation servicing a handful of country centres, is owned by Ms Kingham and her husband, Tony.
They were joined by company director Robert Graham for the announcement.
The trio posed for pictures with a Kendell plane and said they would employ between 80 and 100 people, giving preference to Kendell and Ansett staff.
They also flagged fare discounts for people living in country areas.
Airlines of SA runs services from Adelaide to Port Lincoln, Port Augusta, Cleve and Wudinna.
Kendell flies to Port Lincoln, Ceduna, Broken Hill, Coober Pedy, Olympic Dam, Whyalla, Kangaroo Island and Mt Gambier.
Despite its financial situation, Kendell is currently flying due to a $3.5 million Federal Government bailout package.
Airlines of SA's media adviser, Terry McEwen, said last night: "We are not resiling one centimetre" and insisted the purchase would proceed.
Andersen said a decision about the sale of Kendell was likely to be made after Christmas.

This is a mess... and it seems that no-one knows what is going on.
Here I am hazarding a GUESS (so don't flame me if I'm wrong):
I think KD confidentially told ASA that they were going to win the SA ops. This was said on the quiet without the other bidders knowing. ASA, rejoicing, call a press conference and announce it to the world. The Administrators, embarrassed and hounded by other bidders asking what was going on, deny the sale and claim that there are still five bidders.
It's just that I can't see ASA making this up and what is more after a rebuff by the administrators still insisting they had purchased the operations. It would be too much egg-on-the-face...
I wonder if ASA has some confidential document somewhere to prove its claim...
What ever the situation, it strikes me as one of the more strange sagas of the sad and sorry AN affair.

This only summarises operation in question. Let them get their own house in order before even contemplating such a huge step. I mean they can't cope with their operation as it is now.

ADL Man, KD did not tell this to ASA, no one had any idea they were going to have claimed to bought the airline. It is totally false as reported in the Advertiser this morning. Having said this no one at KD in ADL is surprised at anything ASA do. As well as this no one at KD in ADL wants to be bought by ASA, everyone was happier in administration before this false announcement was made. ASA what were you thinking???
