Post Virgin Blue joins Sabre

Virgin Blue goes global

From AAP
17jan02

DISCOUNT carrier Virgin Blue has secured vital slice of the corporate and international markets through a deal with a leading world travel company.

Virgin Blue said it had signed a distribution arrangement with Sabre Inc, one of the world's leading providers of technology, distribution and marketing services for the travel industry.

The company has terminals in more than 61,000 travel agencies in 112 countries.

The agreement will allow Virgin Blue access to major corporate travel management companies, inbound tour operators and international airlines.

Virgin Blue national sales manager Jon Marshall said international traffic on Virgin Blue had grown tremendously since the collapse of Ansett.

He said Virgin Blue was now in discussions with a number of international carriers.

"Since September, we have seen a dramatic increase in sales to major corporations who have chosen Virgin Blue to meet their travel needs," Mr Marshall said in a statement.

"These organisations have clearly recognised that their shareholders are more concerned about affordable airfares than frequent flyer programs, reheated meals and having their executives jostling for celery sticks in airport lounges."

Mr Marshall said Virgin Blue had also secured key travel agreements with the Queensland and South Australian governments.

Earlier this month, Virgin Blue opened its first government account in Canberra with the High Court of Australia.

You bloody beauty!!!

DJ has been web bookable in a cumbersome and painful manner.

This will save us heaps of time and effort as a 4 sector booking required 2 bookings and time wasted.

A few other items like through baggage checking to be addressed and they will be fine.

With any luck they will be Sabre hosted which will give us open access in many ways.

The glee is totally self serving PPRuners - so apologies.

Best all

Actually I was checking out sabre... They offer everything fromn check-in software to schedule design... I'm not exactly sure what DJ have in their agreement outside hosting their flights on the CRS but if I were them, a decent check-in system wouldn't go astray...

ADL- Sabre is as fine an operating system as I have seen - based of course on the AAonline system.I have worked a great number of systems and despite all the bells and whistles on the newcomers such as Amadeus prefer the raw interface I can still use without Quick Res - which simply means my spaniel could use it in a day but like all her human counterparts not understand what the pull down boxes were doing in the system.

Good choice and a step forward for DJ.

EWL,

As you say, when DJ pax can through check over two or more sectors without having to collect their bags and check-in again at the transit port(s), as QF and AN pax can, Virgin Blue will have taken a giant step toward being more customer friendly. Who wants to see a message like this? "Note: If you plan on booking a follow-on flight, for example Townsville to Brisbane, then Brisbane to Sydney, please allow a minimum of 90 minutes between flight arrival and next take off"

The Sabre deal looks to be all about better distribution to agents for more sales revenue. I may be wrong, but my money is on the deal not including better domestic check-in options. International to domestic? Ha!

Cheers

Possibly so 32 bits - but a move forward.

In my time at East West I screamed my tits off until I got seat allocation across the newtwork.

One crawls until one can walk.

DJ are slowly realising that the european model will never work here and are in survival mode - conform or capitulate. I do not feel the latter is likely. They are too smart for that.

FWIW the original Sabre operating system programme was written by a couple of Australians hired to work on it in the US.
As far as I am aware they are both now living and working in Melbourne.

EWL,

Certainly one step forward, and with QF in the Amadeus camp, Sabre was just about the only option given the shortcomings of Galileo and Open Skies in the airport handling area. But can DJ afford the next steps which will be required if they really aspire to be number 2?

Also waiting to see how the fares differ from the web, to the call centre, to the GDS.

Cheers

Woomera

One of my clients through a major financial acounting mainframe company was Jeff Brown.

He was one of the founders of the Sabre system and very proud of that.

Jeff has departed this mortal coil now - but every time it goes squirelly I know he is there - unplugging things.

Mr Jeff found himself in very many untidy situations over the time I was in charge of his travel including uprisings in Africa and exploding vo9lcanoes in New Guinea - wonderful guy. The apologetic but desperate phone calls made this miserable job worthwhile.

I will bet he is one of the two you refer to Woomera.

Mr Jeff left us over 2 years ago - the world is a lot poorer for his passing.

EWL.

reportfurther

Just used an example for MEL-TSV one-way 5th March

Through fare with levies+taxes. .comes to $320.82

Using MEL-BNE collecting bags and line up. .again for BNE-TSV, will cost you a total with. .levies & taxes $251.64

For a saving of $61.18 and the 45min hassle. .of collecting bags and going through check-in. .again, I would rather. .have the hassle, if your travelling with your. .wife the saving would be $122.36 for the inconvience.

But knowing the average Aussie, they will not. .check for the saving and buy the through ticket,. .another clever move by Brett & the bearded one.

Wirraway. .Add: just checked QF on same route same day,. .their through fare one-way is $292.37 including. .levies & taxes.

The main problem with the "improved" systemis that the through fares are seemingto be more expensive as stated. If it is quick and easy Agents will fall all over it and not default to AN (who finally saw the light) or the Rat.

Clever decisions have degrees of cleverness.

Best all.

Yes- if it wont start - stand on the refuellers steps and hold the valve until it starts - then close the flap - and run like hell!
