Question Flying the 717 - What's it like?

To all Impulse/Qantas Link pilots out there and others who have flown it,. .. .What is it like to fly the 717? I am familiar with it having sat in the cockpit (nice EFIS!) and watched them zoom by... I have a friend in the States who is about to train on it for Airtran Airways. Questions for you:. .. .1. Do you like/dislike the 717? Fun to fly?. .. .2. How does it compare to previous aircraft you have flown?. .. .3. Best and worst characteristic?. .. .4. What would you like to fly NEXT and why?. .. .My friend is looking forward to flying the 717 having already flown EFIS-equipped aircraft. Thanks for your input - I'll pass it along.... .. .Cheers

yeh, I'm curious as to how the 717 goes in oz. What sort of field performace has it got in summer? How's the performance, crz, burn range, ceiling etc? I know its a new gen stuff, how do you reckon it stacks up compared to the 146 (i know is faster!), the F-100 and the 737?. .. .Cheers

Lavdump, Being operated by impulse, I think you'll find the 717 drivers don't get payed enough to keep an internet connection going let alone buy a computer, hence your lack of respones. Learn from that and set your sights on something else.

Cool

3.8 miles to run, G/S 340 joining a 2.5 mile final and then made the rapid, very impressive

Buffet,. .. .Thanks for your help - I look forward to your eventual posting. My friend is about to enter training on the 717 with AirTran in the States - it would be great to have other perspectives. Plus, I am a big fan of Australia and I would love to hear from pilots who fly this bird in and around that great country.... .. .Capt. Claret,. .. .Perhaps you should REFRAIN from drinking before answering posts with lame, nonsensical answers. I am just seeking information from informed crew members - not looking for A-Holes to waste my time.... .. .Cheers

Lavdump, thank you for asking so nicely (and persisting).. .. .Your lack of 'respones' (his spelling, not mine) probably stem from attitudes held by 'The Looka' and the bevy of sad little f@rty acts who like to wish ill to pilots like myself (and our families). Have a look at recent 717 threads on Dunnunda etc to see what I mean... So, at the risk of having to waste valuable calories replying to the inevitable drivel, I'll try to answer you questions.. .. .The 717 is an absolute delight to fly (as well as looking dead sexy) I don't have any similar types on my licence to compare, but most of the direct entry guys love it as a great 'pilots' a/c.. .. .Operationally it is highly flexible in its design role over the shorter high frequency sectors. A 1 tonne increase in MLW has made our lives a lot simpler since the move to QFLink. Typical burn is 2 tonne per hour, cruise approx M 0.78, limited to F370 due 'old' technology wing (same as DC9) as compared to NG 737's etc.. .. .Best fun to be had on high speed arrivals, can comfortably hold 320kt until approx 13nm (as long as you get down & level out of course), tricky part is nailing landings - if you're ever convinced you know how to land the beastie nicely every time, just wait until tommorow! . .. .I'm very happy to be flying it, as far as my next type - I'd like to fly a Mustang weekends (I'm sure reality will kick in eventually!). .. .The company we work for is rapidly on the improve (touch wood) hopefully the 'bad old days' will fade to distant memories... Take what you read on other 717 threads with a grain(s) of salt - the vast majority of VQ pilots are good lads and sound operators. C&T in particular has a good reputation. It'd be interesting to see if the afore-mentioned sad f@rty acts can honestly say they would turn down a seat on the 717...

Red face

lavdump. .. .Perhaps you should look in the mirror when you call people A-holes.. .. .I asked you a simple question. Having re read your second post, I see that
quote:
Nobody flies the 717 in Australia?. .

it a question, not the statement I thought it was.. .. .Whatever, I don't see your response as appropriate or fitting in with the Ten Thingies!

It certainly looks good.I flew the DC9-30 and all MD-80 models. The MD-87 was a hotrod and probably closest to the 717. Wonderful. Douglas built nice airplanes that's for sure. Not specially the easiest to land I recall (the DC-9-30 with flap 50 was but there was a little buffet). Systems and procedures were dead simple.

Sorry about the typo on the last post. I've tried to log in, says I have, but then says I haven't when I go to edit the post... strange.

I didn't think it would take as long as it did for one of the 'sad farty acts' to start spraying his venom about. Comparing posting times, about 5 1/2 hours before good old 'Prop' succumbed to the overwhelming urge to give his 'lever' a sound spanking. Hope for his sake that frequency of use doesn't dull the sensation...

Prop, it's no great achievment to raise my hackles by spending so much time wishing hardship upon me and my family - anyone so doing gets on my tits, be they a 'tosser' or otherwise.... .. .Try and be nice.

There seems to be alot of 717 guys talking about more aircraft arriving (100+ posts)etc, yet maybe some of those drivers could shed some light on this post instead. It would be more useful and productive. thanks...

Fluffy Bunny Feet. .. .Thanks for the info - you mentioned the increase in MTOW since QF bought Impulse - does the B717 now have the payload/range to fly trans Tasman routes (I've heard rumours that QF is considering using them in competition with Air NZ's low cost operator Freedom Air).. .. .GB
