Liberalisation of visual standards for all ADF aircrew recruits
Someone, sometime ago was asking questions about this subject particularly in regards to laser corrective surgery. If said person or anyone else is interested a message has just come out covering the topic of this post. If anyone is interested, post a reply here and I will give you the reference/or quotes from it

Biggles, a lot of cadets within the AAFC (formely the AIRTC) would be interested in this scenario.
I would appreciate any information you may be able to shed.
[email protected] is the best way to get it to me if you can't/ don't want to post it here on PPRUNE.
Regards,

I've done a search, and can't find the post that you refered to that may have appeared in this forum.
I would like to know more about the laser corrective surgery, and how it may affect ones chances of QF or VB.
Any info would be appreciated.

I did this topic with a couple of applicants in Oct 01. Search the military aircrew forum for "glasses in RAAF" to get the details and references.
I don't have access to all the details at present, so if something else has changed feel free to add to this thread ozbiggles.
The basics were that glasses are no longer automatically disqualifying, although I think the new standard is still fairly high, but if you can meet the standard with correction it is OK to have glasses before joining.
Similarly laser corrective surgery of certain types and with certain results is now also permissable subject to heavy checking and restrictions. I would urge great caution and investigation before going down this path.
I would hope that by now all the recruiting units are on top of the detail. If they are not hassle them to get the correct answers.
Good luck to your cadets 302SQN. What a disgusting shame that you have to learn about such valuable changes for your cadets through public websites!

OK, before I start this is copied from a message sent to all recruiting centers. I won't type it out in full (as I don't understand it!)but hope to give you some idea.If you need to really use this info YOU WILL NEED TO CONFIRM ALL THE DETAILS because of the above.
Visual acuity - 6/12 unaided each eye and no worse than 6/6 corrected each eye.
Colour perception - CP2 or better.
Refraction limits - too many to go through.
REFRACTIVE SURGERY
PRK or LASIK are the only procedures permissible (THIS DOES NOT MEAN YOUR IN!).RK is not approved.
There are numerous other issues post op to cover, the ADF state that all the risks for this procedure are your own.
IF people have specific questions with big medical terms I will try to match it to the message, but your best bet is to ask the ADF recruit sections yourself, the main purpose of my post is just to let you know there has been changes. My advice proceed with extreme caution and eyes wide open (sorry couldn't help it).
