Post QF B747SP

Just heard the Qantas B747SP's are to be removed from service in approx. 10 weeks and disposed of.

If true, I will miss seeing them especially landing and taking off.

Thumbs up

Yeah, it looks that way. Not sure when they're due to be retired from service but according to the Boeing website, the two SPs are up for sale as of November.

The -200s are due to start being sold off starting in August 2004 but it looks as though the -300s will be around for quite some time yet.

If you're in the market for a second hand 747, goes well, good service history, all documents and manuals, racing car red on white, check out: http://www.boeing.com/assocproducts/...rts/747-2.html

So the Classics are finally, albeit painfully slowly, on their way out. For better or worse

Welcome to the 21st century coal-shovellers!!

take a look at http://www.plane,art.com/listings.as...acturer=BOEING - then select your type - shows all the a/c QF are currently looking to get rid of, and their availability dates. 2x74Ls become available 11/2001; 3x742s are listed as 'call' (actually there are a couple of other P&W 747-238s being flogged by other operators also); 2x742 Combis are also listed as 'call'; NO 743s are listed; 7x762ERs are listed available at different times from 05/2003 - 06/2004. NO 733s, 734s, 763s or 744s are listed.

Sorry - URL link is http://www.planemart.com/models.aspt...acturer=BOEING And let's face it, the Classics have been on the way out since the first 744 did that epic trip from LHR.

Cool

I watched the first ever 747 arrive in WLG NZ. It was a QF sp, I wasn't even in my teens. Last week, whilst on the ramp. I watched a Qf SP depart AKL. Brought back a lot of memories. I don't ever recall seeing one in between, quite a beautiful craft.

wong one, PA/UA B747SP's were frequent visitors to AKL with the odd visit to CHC.

Routes operated included LAX-AKL-SYD and vv.

Thanks XP - Saw that - the SP's look like 'low' timers - probably real bargains! (Any idea what they are worth?) Couldn't help noticing that the QF 747's are a bit on the high side - guess there's no significance in that - perhaps they just fly further. Notice there was a couple of (not QF) 100's with 100K plus. When do you call it a day with a 747?

Interesting Website at Boeing there.

From SLF point of view, retiring these old birds cant come soon enough. They are a shambles inside. Very tight spaces especially at the window seats where the fuse tapers in. My guess is that the DVT issue has escalated their demise!
