Post Skywest/VB alliance

ABC Net Online:. .. .Skywest. .. .Western Australian regional airline Skywest and Virgin Blue are also seeking to forge an alliance.. .. .Bill Meeke, the managing director of Skywest owners, Airline Investment Limited, says the WA group initially sought to explore the use of Virgin Blue's reservations system, after the Fox-Lew bid to buy Ansett fell through.. .. .But Mr Meeke says it quickly became apparent that much more could be achieved by an alliance between the two concerns. . .. ."We're both low-cost operators," he said.. .. ."They have designs on Western Australia, we also have designs on Western Australia. It seems as though we could achieve more collectively than we might separately.. .. ."So we've had some fairly fruitful discussions and I'm going to Brisbane on Thursday to see if we can't bring that to a head."

"The West Australian - Saturday 9 March 2002". .. ."Virgin eyes WA for expansion. . . .VIRGIN Blue's aggressive expansion plans include more flights to WA and links with regional carrier Skywest Airlines. The low-fare airline was boosted yesterday when the Federal Government backed its. .plans.. .. .Virgin Blue commercial director David Huttner said he would talk to the State Government on March 20 when he attends the Tourism Council Western Australia's WA Airline Services seminar in Perth.. .. ."I will be talking to the State Government about. .route possibilities within WA - we are interested. .in Karratha, Broome and Kalgoorlie" Mr Huttner said. "In fact, flying Perth to Kalgoorlie actually works better for us than Sydney-Perth.". .. .The airline has 16 Boeing 737s of various. .models and took delivery of another 737-800. .this week. Nine more are due by the end of the year. Virgin Blue will hire an extra 1000 staff,. .most probably from Ansett, by the end of the. .year.. .. .Executives are working on new routes, with. .Sydney-Perth a possibility, although extra. .Melbourne-Perth and Adelaide-Perth flights are. .more pressing. The airline also is expected to. .add another 10 Boeing 160-seat 737s next year. .to take the airline's fleet to 35 jets.. .. .Mr Huttner said he would meet Skywest about. .working together in WA. Skywest was linked to. .Tesna and Ansett and is seeking a new partner. .for feeder passengers.. .. .Qantas yesterday denied claims it was increasing fares to take advantage of Ansett's demise.. .. .A survey by Web-based consumer service organisation Infochoice found the discount fares on Sydney-Perth and Brisbane-Perth routes had jumped 20 per cent in recent days.". .. ....so there you go. It was in the paper so it must be happening.....right??

Todays paper said that VB wanted all Ansett terminals but at a fraction of the TESNA price.. .. .The terminal war could hot up pretty quickly if it comes to a fire sale.. .. .Who knows where the alliances will be if they dont get the terminal space?

Below is a copy of what I posted 2 weeks ago on another topic about VB and regional airlines. It appears what I said about the west will happen, now what will happen on the east coast?. .. .I think one of the biggest "gaps" will be in regional Australia. Already Qantaslink, or a Qantas aligned airline are the only operator on many regional routes. If we look at QLD, Qantas, using it's regional airlines (Sunstate, Mac-air, Sunshine Express, Impulse and Eastland Air) is the sole operator on all routes bar one. The only competition is on the BNE-GLA route. How can that be good for the consumer?. .VB do not need to start their own or purchase a regional, they only need an alliance with one or more regionals. VB have many regional's they could align with.. .. .When Hazelton, Kendell's and FWA find buyers they could go with them. Perhaps they could look at the smaller independant regional's,such as Eastland Air, Airnorth, ASA, Sunshine Express, EMU Air etc. I'm sure many of the smaller regionals would jump at the chance to expand their operations and feed Australia's second major. . .. .The aligned regionals could operate under a "brand name", just like Qantaslink. Perhaps will could see names such as;. .. .Virgin Blue Express, Blue Express, Virgin Blue Link, Virgin Link, Blue Link, Virgin Blue Connection, Virgin Connection, Virgin Blue Connect, Blue Connect etc.. .. .The regional aircraft could be painted in the reverse colours that appear on the ex Ansett B737-300 that VB operate.. .. .NSW could be covered by Hazelton, VIC/TAS ans SA Kendell's, Skywest may cover the west, Airnorth could cover the NT and QLD could be covered by FWA, Sunshine Express or Eastland Air.. .. .If VB did have an aligned regional(s) all of Australia would have the chance to "Keep the Air Fare's Fair".. . . . [ 14 March 2002, 12:42: Message edited by: F111 ]
