Australia to put undercover armed guards on flights

SYDNEY, Oct 2 (Reuters) -Australia will place undercover armed guards on random domestic and international flights, one of several new counter-terrorism measures following the attacks on the United States, Prime Minister John Howard said on Tuesday.

The structure of cockpits in Australian planes will be strengthened under a plan approved by the federal cabinet, while airport security clearance and baggage checks will be improved and domestic counter-terrorism capabilities doubled.

The armed guards, to be drawn from police forces and given additional training, will be on flights by Christmas. "We don't want to over-react, but we have a very heavy responsibility not to be in any way complacent... we're dealing in a new environment," Howard told a news conference.

"We want people to continue to travel. The last thing the Australian tourism industry needs, the last thing this country needs, is people to become apprehensive about air travel."

Howard also said he would propose a new law making terrorism an offence carrying a maximum life sentence.

Government and airlines around the world are increasing security following the September 11 attacks when hijacked commercial jets were flown into New York's World Trade Center and the Pentagon in Washington, killing nearly 6,000 people.

I mentioned in my previous post the technology available from "Metal Storm" to prevent a gun being seized from a pilot/sky-marshal and used by the "bad guy".
This technology was featured on the Channel 10 news tonight.
If they are going to arm people on board A/C this seems to be the way to go.
It appears that the major concern in arming people on board is a weapon being taken from the pilot/skymarshal and used against them.
This would prevent that happening.
As I also said, using this with "safe" bullets could be the answer,at least in the short term.

Agreed.......

GETTING SOLID ON COCKPIT DOORS:

United and American Airlines are both moving quickly with plans to reinforce the cockpit doors of all their aircraft with steel bars or crossbar locks. The Associated Press this
week reported that United will begin installation of steel bars and that the carrier has already obtained a waiver from the FAA to bypass the standard approval process for a design modification.
