preventing a progam starting automatically

OK I'm puzzled, I have a program that automatically starts at user log on, there is no setting in the program to turn this feature off so how do I do it? I've been through the registry but cannot see anything obvious. (Windows 7) Yes I can can kill it after it's started but it's the principle.

I've hardly used Windows 7..... but no doubt the concept of startup and login items is still there ?

See what you find in ...

Start -> All Programs -> Startup

OR

Code:

C:\Users\**USERNAME**\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

OR

Good old msconfig.

Not start up programs I know where they are and it doesn't appear there, this program starts when I actually log in with my password.

Green Granite,

I think our posts might have crossed. See my second post.

green granite 6th October 2009 10:10

sorry I've redone that post.

I think you'll find that's just Microsoft terminology for you.

Most stuff that happens on user login will be somewhere in those folders. Unless you have a GPO login script or something funky like that.

Also if you're hunting a virus, then it's a different ballgame.

green granite 6th October 2009 10:21

It's not anywhere in the normal places for start up programs ie msconfig pages. It's not a virus either it's a registry cleaner.

mixture 6th October 2009 10:24

Is it running on login for all users or just your profile ?

green granite 6th October 2009 10:37

just my profile .

mixture 6th October 2009 10:43

Will have a think.

Running as a service?

SD

mixture 6th October 2009 10:51

I was thinking that, but then it would be more likely to target all profiles, not just his ?

green granite 6th October 2009 10:56

Running as a service?
Not listed in the services page, unless it's called something that is not obvious.

mixture 6th October 2009 11:07

Should have asked. What's the software ?

green granite 6th October 2009 11:11

Reg cure........................

parabellum 6th October 2009 11:43

I use Reg Cure. It seems that the 'Manage Start Up' feature deliberately leaves out Reg Cure but does let you disable dozens of other programmes.

BOAC 6th October 2009 12:11

'Hijack this' will have a good look for it. Is it in 'Run' or Run Once' in the registry?
