PPRuNe the Netscape Slayer
PPRuNe seems to have recently started confusing netscape so much that I have to kill it and restart to get back online. Until now it has taken a half hour or so to collapse, but this morning I was unable to access the bulletin boards at all before netscape became comatose. No other websites cause problems, and I can access PPRuNe fine using konqueror on my laptop (which is why I'm here now...)
I remember we had some problems with a certain advert a little while ago, but I'm not sure if that's the problem now. Anyone else got problems? Any ideas? FWIW, Java is turned ON, javascript OFF at the moment. |
Try turning javascript on. I think the BB software uses some javascript so that may be the cause of your problems.
Here is a list of the different browsers, operating systems and screen resolutions of some PPRuNe users: BROWSERS MSIE 5.x 74.3% [==========================> 169155 MSIE 4.x 12.3% [====> 27957 Netscape 4.x 6.4% [==> 14611 Unknown 5.1% [=> 11702 MSIE 6.x 1.3% [> 2942 Netscape 5.x 0.3% [> 725 Netscape 3.x 0.2% [> 405 Opera 0.0% [> 87 MSIE 3.x 0.0% [> 41 Web Spider 0.0% [> 9 MSIE 2.x 0.0% [> 7 Other Netscape 0.0% [> 2 PLATFORMS Windows 98 60.2% [============================> 137053 Windows NT 18.6% [========> 42394 Windows 95 13.9% [======> 31729 Unknown 5.1% [==> 11668 Macintosh 1.5% [> 3424 Linux 0.3% [> 594 Other Windows 0.2% [> 374 Solaris/SunOS 0.1% [> 252 OS/2 0.0% [> 50 Other UNIX 0.0% [> 43 AIX 0.0% [> 25 *BSD 0.0% [> 22 IRIX 0.0% [> 12 Amiga 0.0% [> 3 SCREEN RESOLUTION 800x600 44.0% [===============================> 100117 1024x768 33.5% [=======================> 76365 Unreported 11.6% [========> 26455 640x480 3.3% [==> 7488 1280x1024 2.6% [=> 5969 1152x864 2.2% [=> 4991 800x553 0.3% [> 764 1600x1200 0.2% [> 557 960x720 0.2% [> 410 1024x721 0.2% [> 364 COLOR DEPTH 65536 (16 bit) 50.7% [======================> 115430 32 bit 21.5% [=========> 48973 Unreported 11.6% [=====> 26473 16 million (24 bit) 10.3% [====> 23461 256 (8 bit) 5.7% [==> 12886 1 bit 0.1% [> 254 4 bit 0.1% [> 164 15 bit 0.0% [> 2 JAVASCRIPT VERSION 1.2 81.9% [=========================> 186357 Disabled by user 6.4% [=> 14629 1.3 6.4% [=> 14594 Unsupported 5.2% [=> 11800 1.1 0.1% [> 215 1.0 0.0% [> 48 Gives you some idea of the variations! :eek: |
Fascinating bit of info Danny, didn’t realise that you had access to the info on what operating system we use.
Just one question, why is Pprune so slow now, I know you updated the software, is the problem and how can we help to speed up the site? Keep up the great work, |
Cheers, Danny. I'm at home at the moment, but I'll give it a go once I'm back at work.
Solaris/SunOS 0.1% [> 252 |
Gee, you would think that Java would work best on Solaris/SunOS (as Java is a Sun product, isn't it?) ;) Surprised they would even let their OS run without Java :p
|
Unfortunately, Netscape isn't a Sun product and the browser that comes with Solaris is so laughable that I don't use it.
It all seems to have sorted itself out, anyway. Never did have to turn javascript on. Strange - most probably something at this end causing grief. |
Evo I mentioned the same Nutcrape problem once before. The main culprit was that stupid Yell.com banner ad which even sidetracked my AdSubtract program. That ad caused a lot of problems.
Anyway the whole thing was solved once I downloaded the Opera browser. I use it exclusivley for PPRuNe and have no complaints. Might pay to give it a try. Its free. |
I also dumped escape and loaded Opera. Best thing I ever did. Top marks. :D
