Dateline pop up
Hi,
Been trying to sort out a few problems on my sisters computer and I'm having trouble in getting the following items sorted. Dell machine running XP Home with Telewest Broadband. Problem 1, A pop up opens when I open IE, linking a site called Dateline and offers to re routing through them at £1.50 per minute, when you click no it just keeps poping up, there is no modem connected so it cannot dial, how do I get rid of this and some other pop ups. I have run Norton's virus program and also spybot program and have removed everything listed but it still pops up. Problem 2, A tool bar is running called Mysearch its a blue coloured tool bar which has links to sex and others sites, I have tried to remove it but it keeps putting itself on my home home page address even though I keep changing it. Thanks |
touch&go,
Do follow everything in the: Guide for Eliminating Spyware, Adware, and Random Popups And you might want to run and post Hijack This! to see what other pests are in your sister's system. Take Care, Richard |
Hi touch&go,
Her's the info on how to get, and post, a Hijack This log.. Please download 'Hijack This!' from here, unzip, and place it in it’s own folder, (not in the temp folder, or on the desktop) doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan". When the scan is finished, click "Save Log", and copy and paste it in a reply. This will give us a rundown of what’s going on in your PC. One of us here will be glad to analyse it for you. Don’t fix anything yourself yet, as a lot of the stuff on that list will be harmless or required. Please disable smileys before posting. :) Cheers Liam |

Hi Touch&go,
Hmmm, it might be best if you print this off, as you have a fair few nasties there.. Please run a new HJT! Scan, and check to fix the following entries, being sure to double check that you haven't missed any. Now click Apply to all folders, then click Apply then OK. Then boot into safe mode, (see here for info if needed) and delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\Temp (or C:\WINNT\Temp) folder, but not the folder itself. Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion. Then click Proceed, to save your settings. Now click the Scan button. When scan is finished, check the little box to the left of each entry to select them for removal, and get rid of them. Next, reboot again and download Spybot - Search & Destroy, from here: if you haven't already got the program. Click on Settings, and Settings again. Go to the Webupdate section, and check Display also available beta versions. Now press Online, and search for, and put a check mark next to all updates, and install following the prompts. Next, close all Internet Explorer windows, and click Check for Problems. Once the scan is complete, have SpyBot remove all it finds marked in RED. Next reboot and go here, and run the online virus scan; choosing the Autoclean option just before clicking the Scan button. Then please post a new log for a final once over. We may need to do a second clean up, just because of the amount of scumware that you've accumulated, but we'll see how you go. :) I'm also going to get some advice on the 018 entry, as I haven't seen that variant before, and there is nothing [helpful] via Google. I'd also suggest getting rid of Messenger +2, as it includes Lop.. See here for info. (I just checked and the Spywareinfo site is still down due to a DDos attack, so feel free to leave it a while to read, before deciding. Cheers Liam |

touch&go,
A thought for your sister. If she needs the Google Toolbar for searching the web, since she does it so frequently, then ok. Now if she uses it because she gets so many popups, then I think she should consider going without it. The problem I find with popup stoppers is, they mask a problem the computer is having and you do not find out about it till much later than you should. If you do not have a router or some other form of Firewall, I would disable the Messenger Service as mentioned in the Guide I linked earlier. To Stop the Messenger Service: Start >> Control Panel >> Administrative Tools >> Services Then Find Messenger and change Startup Type from Automatic to Manual. Take Care, Richard |
Hi touch&go,
I'm still waiting for a definitive answer for the 018 entry, so if you could hang on a little while longer. The latest version of HJT (this one) has only been out for a week or so, and the range of this entry has been extended to find filters, so it's a new toy basically.. :) The other thing I find strange is that psssyd.exe is still there. It could be related to the twaintec/mxtarget BHOs, or a new variant of the peper trojan. If you notice you got rid of one, and the other appears in it's place. :) This isn't a rarity.. quite often new stuff will appear in a second log, so could you please run a new sacn and fix the following.. O2 - BHO: MxTargetObj Class - {0000607D-D204-42C7-8E46-216055BF9918} - C:\WINDOWS\mxTarget.dll O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [tyxqjpbbxbfyk] C:\WINDOWS\System32\psssyd.exe then boot into safe mode and delete.. C:\WINDOWS\mxTarget.dll C:\WINDOWS\System32\psssyd.exe Then boot back into normal mode and go here and run the program. You need to be online whilst doing so, to enable complete removal. Please grant it access through your firewall if prompted. Then post a new log please. Cheers Liam |
Hi touch&go,
Could you also please download FINDnFIX, run the LOG.BAT file and post the log that's created in your next post, with the new HJT log. Cheers Liam |

Hi Touch & Go,
I gave you a bad link for FindNFix in the last post.. http://freeatlast100.100free.com/index.html is the good one. It's just to eliminate that 018 entry. Everything else is good to go.. :ok: If you could post the log.bat for me please.. :) Cheers Liam |
E-Liam,
Interested to read about the HijackThis utility - so downloaded it and found what I reckon are some worrying results. Would you mind taking a quick look ? The scan was run after my weekly maintenance of Adaware etc. Probably best to PM it to you ? Thanks in anticipation of your assistance. LL34 |
Go for it.. :ok: :D
Just remeber to disable smileys.. Post it here if you want.. that way everyone gets to see how it works. Cheers Liam |
